How about bd, troppi, jen, me, labrat, jep, jules, kashia, evan, gernot
<rip>, ink, and for a time, you. The only real reg still here is keith.
in 2000 / 2001, the Internet had a hiccup in terms of its reputation as
being a worthwhile infrastructure for businesses.
growth (in the numbers of people subscribing to the Internet) noticeably
slowed.
from 2001, alt.tasteless.jokes started shedding subscribers like a dog
shaking off fleas.
interest in Usenet continues to decrease. there's plenty of other online
services competing for users' attention. there's a lot more quality content
out there and communities to be a part of, especially in the Blogosphere.
one thing that is readily noticeable is that Usenet spam has sharply
decreased. the reason for this is simple - it's ineffective. the majority of
Usenet subscribers are low-life losers who have no money to spend on
anything. those with money, have a more sophisticated approach to how we
spend our cash. we require that something have a measure of quality about
it, and most adverts posted on Usenet tend not to have that.
the hot new target for spam is the Blogosphere. any blog which allows
comments or trackback pings is going to be spammed.
spam is still more effective than paid for advertising.
therefore the legal war on spam is as ineffective as the War on Drugs.
you cannot legislate against a market. you cannot turn back the tide (of
market forces).
there are billions of dollars being made each year from spam and from
selling drugs. whilst that remains true, it will not be stopped.
to apply moral epithets to it, is unhelpful and incorrect. to war against it
is to oppress the free choice of huge numbers of people.
as Jesus told the Pharisees, "You without sin, you cast the first stone.
Otherwise please just *****!"
