Gingrich: Bilingualism is 'Ghetto'
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with
"the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked requirements that ballots be
printed in multiple languages.
"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in
any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, said
Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination
in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of
Republican Women.
"The American people believe English should be the official language of the
government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in
English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn
the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto,"
Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100.
"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If
that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except
English," he said.
Peter Zamora, co-chair of the Washington-based Hispanic Education Coalition,
which supports bilingual education, said, "The tone of his comments was very
hateful. Spanish is spoken by many individuals who do not live in the
ghetto."
He said research has shown "that bilingual education is the best method of
teaching English to non-English speakers." Spanish-speakers, he said, know
they need to learn English. "There's no resistance to learning English,
really, among immigrants, among native-born citizens. Everyone wants to
learn English because it's what you need to thrive in this country."
In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation's official
language. He's also said all American children should learn English and that
other languages should be secondary in schools.
In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses "long-term dangers to the
fabric of our nation" and that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is
very dangerous."
Bilingual programs teach students reading, arithmetic and other basic skills
in their native language so they do not fall behind while mastering English.
Since 1975, the Voting Rights Act has required ballots and other election
assistance in languages other than English in jurisdictions where at least 5
percent of voting-age citizens are not proficient in English and literacy
rates are below the national average.
The issue of a national language will likely re-emerge when Congress
considers immigration legislation later this year.

Time to Put English First
Human Events Online
Newt Gingrich
http://www.newt.org/backpage.asp?art=4081
One of the most frequent complaints I hear when I'm out traveling and
speaking to groups is the lack of importance given to English as the
language of success in the United States today. Whether it's the
government's printing election ballots in other languages or bilingual
education, Americans are concerned about the future of English as a unifying
bond in our country.
Newt's got my vote...if he should run

Speaking as a formerly-Republican Conservative who feels utterly
betrayed by the Bush administration & the [R]epublican party in
general, I can tell you that it's going to take a systematically-
orchestrated MIRACLE for Newt to pull the last-minute rabbit out
of the hat. Hillary Clinton is indisputably the shoe-in for the
White House. Conservatives may not agree with her Liberal issues,
but at least we know from past experience that her and the First
Gentleman, former two-term President Bill Clinton, will probably
manage to keep the status quo: One Nation By Lawyers For Lawyers
running fairly smoothly. Foreigners are certainly on friendlier
terms with the Clinton's than they are with the Bush's. Agreed?
America has developed far more serious and deadly problems than
so-called "illegal" immigration, or "English-only" pep-rallies.
America is facing global Armageddon: the mother of tribulations.
If the GOP expects to win back some genuine Conservative support,
they'll be expected to shoot down Abortion (except in real cases
of rape, and possibly incest), disestablish Atheism as America's
official State religion, and post the Ten Commandments & Golden
Rule in every classroom and courtroom across America, bar none,
starting yesterday. Show me don't tell me. The GOP's worn-out
campaign promises are dead in the water. It's do or die time...
Partyless Conservative,

What a true idiot to think he could convince us that he or she was ever a
conservative Republican! If you were then you would be supporting Newt and
campaigning him of all people was never courted by the Bush administration.
You certainly wouldn't be rooting for Americas favorite Marxist, the
Clintons. You must really feel most people are dumb enough to buy into what
you say. Geez Louise you commies are all in for a surprise come the 2008
elections.

Indeed, a true idiot.
If you were then you would be supporting Newt
There are two preconditions which must be met before us now-
partyless Conservatives will support Newt Gingrich. These are:
1) Newt Gingrich must officially enter the race for President, and
2) Newt Gingrich must convince us now-partyless Conservatives that
he will declare full-scale, no-holds-barred *WAR* against the
Anti-Christian Liberal Atheists. And when I say "convince", we
don't mean empty campaign promises, but the blood-dripping heads
of Anti-Christian Liberal Atheists on a collective pike would be
a good start. Show me don't tell me. Otherwise I will not support
the G.O.P., regardless of who runs for President on their ticket.
Maybe other Conservatives will vote for hard-line Anti-Christian
Liberal Atheist candidates, but I, for one, shall certainly not.
and
campaigning him of all people was never courted by the Bush administration.
I can accurately translate Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Gallic French with
little problem, but I must confess I'm mystified with the above passage.
Firstly Bush 43 was appointed--not elected--President in the wake of the
hopelessly-deadlocked election of 2000. Secondly, Bush 43 *did* court us
Conservatives for the election of 2004; Hanoi John Kerry was unelectable
in any case, guaranteeing Bush-Cheney a resounding victory no matter what.
You certainly wouldn't be rooting for Americas favorite Marxist, the
Clintons.
As compared with whom, far-left Anti-Christian Liberal Rudolph Guiliani?
If he's the best that the GOP can do, all Conservatives should register
and vote for Hillary Clinton on Tuesday November 4th, 2008 anno Domini.
You must really feel most people are dumb enough to buy into what
you say.
I must? I forgive your piteous ignorance, but the fact of the matter is,
that my years of blogging experience and fifty years of life have taught
me that all people, irrespective of their socio-political and religious-
academic affiliations, care only about mammon-worship, and self-worship,
and nothing else whatsoever do they care about. C'est la vie, buckwheat.
Geez Louise you commies are all in for a surprise come the 2008
elections.
Over the years, I've been called every name in the book--and then some. But
up until now, I've never been accused of being a Communist...I'm flattered. :)

I guess it had to happen.
I think old newt is correct on this one. This is a first for me. I never
thought I would ever agree with anything he would say.
A difference in language is near the top of the list when it comes to
reasons to hate and kill someone. Religion will always be at the top of
the list.

I whole-heartedly agree that bilingual education should be replaced by
immersion in English, but I see no need for an official language. The
whole issue is guaranteed to be divisive and cause a great big tempest
over a whole lot of nothing. Any child raised in the US will learn
perfect English in addition to whatever other languages the kid is
exposed to. In some parts of the world (e.g. Caucusus region of
Russia) children grow up learning a half dozen languages. A child's
brain is an astonishing sponge for learning language.
