So why do you act morally?

Because it's in my own interest (reason) and because I empathize
(conscience).

Also because you have been *socialised* as you have - within a broadly
liberal and tolerant culture that is respectful of the individual, and whose
many centuries of bloody struggle and exhausting negotiation and painful
trial-and-error (all further discussed and explored and elaborated in the
mass of drama and literature produced by penetrating minds) have created a
highly complex set of broadly workable moral and ethical 'values' that
everyone but the psychopath is able to absorb in infancy and unconsciously
live by thereafter. 'Reason' and 'conscience' are flattering
'justifications' for why you act as 'morally' as you do -- but the essential
'reason' is that, since the time you were 5 years old, your 'conscience' has
*never been given any choice in the matter*...!
Anyone who believes - like your damaged idiot interlocutor clearly does! -
that modern humans in modern society can or should embrace certain 'values'
and 'morals' merely on the strength of 'Biblical teaching' and a 'belief' in
the 'God of Abraham' is *deluding themselves*. Not only do societies never
derive their actual values in such a ridiculous way (even though many are
the demagogues who spew their filthy projections into a 'book' and fancy
that they are thereby creating a 'table of values' for a people...), but any
individual who actually tried to 'live by' the 'word' of the 'Holy Bible'
would be *incarcerated* within *24 hours*: whichever 'Testament' you look
at, it's just too primitive, too self-contradictory, and in places too
sheerly fucking *psychotic* to form the actual basis of any functioning
modern person's actual value system. So it never does, and never has...

I was "socialized" in a very religious home, so in fact I attribute my
base of moral values to that. I was "lucky" enough to leave that
repressive (but very loving) environment while I was still young enough
to unlearn the irrational parts and keep the valuable stuff (consisting
mainly of the Golden Rule). I had to acquire enlightened self interest
on my own, but it wasn't a particularly difficult rational choice to make.
My own kid has the benefit of my experience on both sides of that fence
and her mother's non-practicing believer perspective, which seems to be
making her into a balanced person able to weigh things and come to her
own conclusions. She's a real good kid (14) with a strong moral sense
and no detectable religious leanings yet, although she likes going to
church sometimes with some of her friends for social purposes. I don't
discourage that, and try to teach her tolerance, an open mind and a
critical eye.
My criticism of the extremist believers here is intended to show them
that the mental rut they're in isn't all there is.
