Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi surrendered power on January 16th, 1979 at
the urging of Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar. Bakhtiar dissolved
SAVAK, freed political prisoners, it was Bakhtiar who, all on his own,
allowed the Ayatollah Khomeini to return. Bakhtiar was hoping that
Khomeini would created a sort of Shi'a "Vatican" in Qom, Iran's
holiest city. At no time did Carter urge that Khomeini be given
control of the country. I challenge you to find a citation that backs
your claim.
Carter wanted that "popular revolution" that you love so much to
succeed,
Douglas.
Show me one place where I praised or supported the Iranian Revolution.
So you don't like popular revolutions?
Love 'em. As long as they end up with something resembling a free
state.
Unlike you, I've been on the front lines in the war against Islamic
extremism.
Surrrrrre you have, Douglass.
Spent more time in uniform than you did.
Oh, want to play the old 'Battling DD 214 game'? I had a TS-SCI
clearance and you had what? Clearance for the latrine and arms room?
Now show me a direct quote from President Carter calling for or
praising the Islamic Revolution.
Do you think Carter was unaware of the nature of the people who he
wanted to control Iran after the Shah?
Carter was backing Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar. Bakhtiar was not
an Islamic extremist, supported close ties to the west, and once the
Shah was gone disbanded SAVAK, freed political pisoners, and called
for a new Iran based on the rule of law. He lasted about a month
before the Army melted aways and the Revolution took over.
See, there you go again! Bakhtiar was not a successor of the Shah but
was
appointed by the Shah.

No, sit down, read my cite and be quiet like a good boy, Douglass.
Are you capable of not being a condesending goober?
People generally get what they deserve from me, Douglass.
One "s" in my name. Thank you. I'm trying to have a reasoned debate
over facts. You seem to do everything you can to avoid facts in favor
of name calling. Why is that?
All you've given us are assertions, Doglass, not facts. Assertions are
not
facts. I've provided cites. You have not.
Other than one unattributed source outsidethe US government, the
article contains no evidence that Carter wanted Khomeini in charge.
Only that Carter urged the Shah to institute human rights. I did find
it amusing that the changes that the author found so horrifying
(freedom of assembly, open trials by jury) are also found in our own
Constitution.
All in all, you article doesn't contradict a single fact I posted,
which means that your timeline is still wrong.
Of course it does.
OK, point them out.
I have. You've yet to post any facts, so far as I can tell.
Now, sit down and eat your cookie, Douglass.
All out of cookies, and the ones I have baking are for Baycon.
Doglass, sit down, be quiet and take your thumb out of your mouth.

Yup, and after the Shah stepped down, he stepped in. He tried to
instal a moderate government, but lost the support of the Army, and
that was all she wrote.

Read the cite, Dogass. The Shah appointed him. He did not "step in"
after the
Shah stepped down.
I have cites. You have assertions. You do understand the difference,
right?

Dogass, debate is more than an exchange of assertions. If you had
more than that GED you'd understand that.
