Download Mozilla or Firefox as your browser from www.mozilla.org. They
are free, open source [non Micro$soft] browsers that have pop-up
blocking built right in [you do have to turn it on in the options].
Firefox is very lightweight and fast yet is a full featured browser with
tabbed browsing - a wonderful feature that M$ is sure to copy and claim
to have "innovated" in a future version of Internet Exploder.
Go to www.grc.com. Scroll down the page and you can find three
freeware programs for download and installation. They disable UPnP,
DCOM and WinMessanger. Those are usually left turned on by default on
an installation and are the major route for pop-up spams and other net
annoyances.
Finally, install a freeware firewall that actually works - the built in
"firewall" in XP is like swiss cheese. Visit
http://www.zonelabs.com/m/security3.html and download the last one on
the list that is free for personal use.
Using the Mozilla browser, with the 3 unnecessary services suppressed,
and a firewall installed, you should have a more peaceful and pleasant
experience on the net :)

Thanks for the info . . . I'll make time to follow your recommendations
early next week.
I sent unhappy emails to 6 of the 7 companies that intrude on my pc:
1) WalMart
2) Target
3) University of Phoenix online
4) Kennedy-Western University online
5) Bosley Hair Restoration
6) Select Quote Insurance
7) Vigel "intimacy" cream www.femaleadvantage.com
.. . . and I may as well see what they have to say about themselves.
#5 hung up on me--twice--when I got on their website "chat window" and told
'em why I was boycotting 'em. Third time, their "chat window" said they
were busy.
#4 emailed me already, apologizing for the problem, saying they didn't
authorize the ad, and promised to look into it.
#7 looks like a scam run by the ad agency itself, and doesn't give any home
email addresses. Gives no information at all, actually . . .
I suspect that if enough folks told the companies who's stuff is advertised
this way how annoying it is instead of buying more software for a quick fix,
they'd stop it, or put some big money pressure on politicians to put an end
to the problem. I dunno if I have the patience to wait that long, though.

Thanks, max . . . I got your site saved as a "favorite," and will check
there in a few days.
I got messages back from a few of the companies I contacted (Target, K-W
University, and Select Quote), and they said they'd "look into it." I'm
curious to see what might transpire, so I'll just let this dog lie until
next week and see what they do, and by then I should be pretty much fed up
with this invasion of the advertisers.
Here's a list so far of the offending advertisers; these folks have lost my
business until they fix this madness:
1) WalMart
2) Target
