next sunday, go to the library *instead of* church. church is wasted

Yes, but Bill seems trapped in the church's system. Weren't they the ones
who were going to help him get an apartment? I guess attendance at Sunday
is what they ask in return...

BTW, I do not know the US market that well, but I would be surprised if a
computer would really have to cost $2000. Not even brand new. And when
you have only very little money a three/four year old one from the second
hand store will do just fine. Some people/companies where I live give
them away for free to schools and charities.

They give away to school and charities and not to inviduals.
That difference is worth mentioning because they can still
get back what they gave under US tax system.
You've better get the facts straight beofre you raise false hope.

Perhaps where you are, but around here there _are_ (or have been,
anyway) free computers being given to poor people. In addition, there
are people like me who have too many old computers/parts lying about
that need to go to a new home, just so we can fill the space back up
with newer stuff (except that I collect old computer gear).

Of course, this stuff http://www.cs.uiuc.edu/about/history.php could
explain something of that.

So should you. A tax credit for giving an item to a charity can only
be for its current value, not its original cost. If this is what
you're doing, you might want to get your tax records ready for an
audit.
After all, yesterday was the day the federal government completed the
stripping of all Americans of any Internet privacy. They're probably
giddy with all the ways they can abuse this new power. I'm sure
finding tax cheats is in the "help pay the bills" category.
I haven't researched where to get used or donated PCs, but $2 grand is
way more than I'd pay for a new high end PC now. There's plenty of
very adequate ones available for under $500 (even laptops). I'm sure
a good used one could be had for half that much.
