Actually, no they can't get broadband. The closest to it is ADSL.
Even Satelite internet is so limited in range it's a joke.
I was there in April and the best they can come up with is Telkom ADSL
- which wasn't availabli in my area (nr Rustenburg) but I did get a
dial-up via a phone that took 6 months 1 week and 5 days to install
from first application.
telephone installs take 2 - 3 weeks. that's still unacceptable.
AND you have to pay Telkon for all calls local
and long distance so:
(1) you pay for the phone line.
(2) you pay R1.20 per minute (thats about US .20 cents per minute for
a slow, slow 56 k link to the internet.
it's roughly 30 cents per minute peek time.
(3) You have to pay premium prices for your service provider.
R75 per month for dial up Internet.
Their telecommunications "giant" TELKOM, by their monopoly on
telecommunications is soly responsible for severely limiting that
countrys growth, people simply cannot afford the internet - it's a
luxury item.
