In response to the 2001 Census of Population and Housing question,
Australians' stated religious affiliations were: 27% Catholic, 21%
Anglican, 21% other Christian denominations and 5% non-Christian
religions. Just over one-quarter of all Australians either stated they
had no religion, or did not adequately respond to the question to
enable classification of their religion.
Just cos your not a practising Christian doesnt mean you aint.

Not according to the Church.

Officially a Christian nation - apparantly not - werent we once?
Predominantly Christian - i reckon.

I know a huge number of people who are Xtian on paper only. In view of
the Xtian teachings they certainly do not behave as if they were one.
If I were God I would kick shrub and gnome out of any of my houses of
worship. LOL

Yes the % is probably gettin lower each year, so are values, courtesy,
immorality, community spirit, common fukin decency. Not that
non-Christians dont have values or Christians arent prone to sin.

I think you have lost the plot on this point. As I have already told

Not at all. I am stating facts and not fiction. The Catholic church is
a rigid organisation and does not allow for much variation in the
interpretation of its dogma. That is why that idiotic Polish Pope had
made a point of replacing his cardinals and bishops with the most
dogmatic and inflexible church leaders world wide.
Any dissent within this church will be silenced, you can be sure of
that.
Excommunication is a very strong tool that is seldom used because it
attracts too much public attention to the church's machinations.
Inconvenient opinions will be silenced through other means.
Actually the Catholics are quite happy to threaten with
excommunication:
See:http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=3D19824
But the church has its own political goals, and usulally protects
instead of criticizes conservative, rightwing politicians. And even
when it criticizes it makes sure that such criticism does not have any
consequences. When it comes to the left side of the political spectrum
the catholic behavior is a lot more reactive.

Like those who try standing up for the rights of the poor in South
American counrtries.
Hmmm.

balanced - what was i saying before about free will?

Free will? Yeah. If you do not worship this deity you end up in hell
for eternity. A triumph of free will, I see.

It is hard to live up to an imaginary hero's ideal. Small wonder that
people can't do it.

Formulate sensible arguments and I will try to deal with them on their
merit. Give me ***** and your drivel will be ignored.

You are just not worth the trouble. Coming to me with conservative
moralising as proof for the social necessity for belief in a deity does
not warrant serious consideration.
Really!

Your unbalanced ramblings do?

The only thing unbalanced here is your reasoning. It is based on
emotions and indoctrination therefore has lttle to do with the real
world around you. Small wonder you are avoiding all of my attempts to
stir this discussion back to politics.
Look. You are bloody off topic, both in aus.politics and in
alt.atheism. You do not want to discuss politics nor the philosophical
aspects of atheism. You come here and attempt to smother us with your
ignorance. Don't expect anyone to put up with it so easily.

So have you made up your mind yet which is the real deity among the
listed one?

Mate you still havent got the point yet?

The point is that man is quite capable of inventing a multitude of
imaginary explanations in order to explain (and control) its
environment.
The reason why at least 90% of all those old deities went down the
drain is because our understanding of the world has came to a point
where no sane human was willing to believe in them any more. Your deity
will go the same way eventually.
