Holidays," someone needs to step up and fill the void
(non-Christians/atheists/agnostics). What would be funnier than seeing
Walmart's sales increase as a result of the perceived slight by the
Christian Right? I never shop there, but I will now.

In your example of a bank holiday I can explain that easy.
The bank is closing because the particular day happens to be known as
a holy day for a religion.
So, you're not celebrating a bank holy day, but a holy day where most
businesses just decide to honor by being closed that 'holy day'
