Oh! We can figure this out then! How many provinces are left? Multiply that
number by how many soldiers we lost "liberating" Anbar and Diyala. That'll
give the military a rough number of how many more body-bags to order.

Has the Arab League volunteered to oppress, er, occupy Iraq for the
foreseeable future? You know that Bush has shown himself incompetent to
occupy Iraq and Afghanistan and has done so badly that supporters of
this neverending occupation will lose in 2008. Too bad, America really

http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2007/08/bad-news-for-dems-baathists-
leader-al.html
Baghdad, 22 August (AKI) - The leader of Iraq's banned Baath party,
Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, has decided to join efforts by the Iraqi
authorities to fight al-Qaeda, one of the party's former top officials,
Abu Wisam al-Jashaami, told pan-Arab daily Al Hayat.
"AlDouri has decided to sever ties with al-Qaeda and sign up to the
programme of the national resistance, which includes routing Islamist
terrorists and opening up dialogue with the Baghdad government and
foreign forces," al-Jashaami said.
Al-Douri has decided to deal directly with US forces in Iraq,
according to al-Jashaami. He figures in the 55-card deck of "most
wanted" officials from the former Iraqi regime issued by the US
government.
In return, for cooperating in the fight against al-Qaeda, al-Douri
has asked for guarantees over his men's safety and for an end to Iraqi
army attacks on his militias.
This ought to please those antiwar Democrats who are complaining about
not enough political progress in Iraq.
Iraqi-American friend Haider Ajina says this about the the news:
Yes, al Douri (the red Satan). The Saudi's must have put the
pressure on him. he would only do this because he is loosing. I am
afraid he may be buying time.
I think its like sharing your sleeping bag with a weak and tired
rattle snake...
Interpol issued an arrest warrant for Izzat Abrhim al-Douri three days
ago.

al Qaeda is on the run.

On the run or simply moving out of way of a necessarily temporary
action? Arming Sunnis had the predictable first step political
results: the Shiites are really upset. Oh, and the Sunnis have left
the government. Having progress in one area is very easy if you ignore
the rest.

Anbar and Diyala province are no longer
terrorist territory.

And the south is firmly in the hands of Shiites independent of the
government.

al Qaeda is on the run.

On the run or simply moving out of way of a necessarily temporary

results: the Shiites are really upset.

Which Shi'ites?

Oh, and the Sunnis have left
the government. Having progress in one area is very easy if you ignore

They've been in and out of the government all summer. Finding things to

And the south is firmly in the hands of Shiites independent of the

They're on the list.

No, they left and did not return. And it is not a question of what is
working, but what direction the sum total is moving. And it is moving
to separation and violence. Millions have been displaced and no sense
of anyone even thinking about dealing with that. No progress has been
made on any of the deep structural problems that have been there from
the start. Instead you are cheering about small progress on one of the
problems caused by the invasion. I am sorry, Fred, but optimism is not

am sure that Maliki will love that.

Maliki is the legitimate elected Prime Minister of Iraq. "Standing

As I said, you seem behind the times here. Lots of efforts to get rid
of Maliki:

Sadr, on the other hand, is not legitimate by any standard. His "power
and influence" come strictly from the fact that he's a terrorist.

His power and influence comes from his ability to get Shiites to
support him and from his militia, which often engages in terrorism.
That does not mean he does not have power and influence.

influence, not Maliki.

You sure you want to stand anywhere near Sadr?

I am not standing anywhere near him.

You're the one claiming that he has power and influence.

Wait a goldarn minute, here. This is one of the most bizarre responses
I have seen from you, Fred, and that is saying a lot. Let's see, I
don't support George W. Bush, but I certainly know he has power and
influence. Likewise, I think Ahmadinejad of Iran is a danger, but he
certainly does have power and influence in Iraq and in much of the
Middle East. The same can be said for Chavez in Latin America. So how
does admitting that someone has power and influence supporting that
person?

Maliki is the legitimate elected Prime Minister of Iraq. "Standing
behind" him is simply saying that Iraq has a legitimate government.

True, so far.

Sadr, on the other hand, is not legitimate by any standard. His "power
and influence" come strictly from the fact that he's a terrorist.

Sadr also has elected representatives in the government. Doesn't that
fact also account for his power and influence. Not to mention, Sadr's
representatives have been supporters of Maliki, which also helps to
account for his power and influence.

I don't like him and see him as a
danger. I just don't close my eyes to inconvenient dangers.

You're confusing "public enemy" with "power and influence".

OK, I was wrong. You can get more bizarre...

Oh, spare me. Quit trying to justify not backing the right side of the
war.

Matt is correct. Your response is quite bizarre. Now, would you
explain how my saying Sadr does have power and influence says I am not
supporting the "right" side (meaning the people Fred has decided, in
his great wisdom (sic)) in the war.
You really do need a reality check, Fred.

I think Fred is claiming that somehow Sadr has no power or influence
in Iraq. Which is even more bizarre than your interpretation. Fred and
others made this big deal that Sadr has supposedly run away to Iran
because the Surge was so scary. So they can't admit that he returned
and controls a major faction in Iraq and most of the southern part of
the country.

Why on earth would you want me to admit something that isn't true? Oh,
that's right, you're a librul and you'll believe anything.

Yangie-poos are desperately trying to talk it down. That's plenty of
evidence right there.
