I got it yesterday. My first virus. Ohmygod! I'm not a virgin
anymore.
Very clever little fucker. I first noticed it last week-end. Only I
didn't know what it was. I was surfing around looking for tasteful,
artistic photographs of horny sluts and suddenly a window pops up and
says it's shutting down the computer in 60 seconds. Something about NT
Authority/System, Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
Then a few days later, yesterday, it hit full force. It began re
booting my computer every few minutes. No set times but random.
I start doing all sorts of stuff. Scandisk, fix the registry, safe
mode, actually paid for System Mechanic and nothing worked. So I'm
thinking, 'oh *****! I might have to do a format', with nothing saved.
Arrrrgh, my music...
Then it occurred to me, a virus. But...but... not me! So I went to
Macrosuck and sure enough, front page news. In the 60 seconds it took
me to read the web page, there it was. I followed the direction and
the fucker is dead. Of course it took me half an hour to read all the
directions because of the re booting.
I'm not sure but is the RPC part of the really annoying action when
the computer screws something up and wants to call home with a report
to MS? Anybody got a registry fix for this?
Anyway, I thought I might warn anyone not knowing about it. And to
be honest, I don't have a clue as to how I got the bug. I'm always
careful about opening attachments and this my first virus after eight
years on the computer. I suggest going to MS and getting the patch.
Especially if you get the RPC thing. It appears to take a few days to
power up.

A very informative article containing information about how the worm
spreads. From what I gathered reading it, it comes form an infected
computer scanning for vulerable ports, probably having nothing to do with
the website you were visiting when you noticed it. Download.com also has a
copy of the patch.

Yes, it is the first of probably a very long line of viruses that can actually
push itself on to your computer. There is no need to open or run files, there
is no need to download anything, there is no need to do anything other than
have your computer on-line.

I was talking about that to my boss today. I'm doing the stone work
on his three million dollar house. He wondered if the anti-virus
companies might have a hand in releasing viruses to improve sales. It
stop to make me think.

When you have to get to that level of conspiracy theories, let's
just stop, mmk? ;)
Now, one thing I do believe is that security "experts" try to
scare people to have job security. My biggest beef at the moment
is the apparent lack of security in wi-fi networks.

I was almost going to mention that in my post, then I remembered
the S and L scandal, big oil jacking the prices because of
'shortages', tax cuts, Enron, Oliver North, Nixon, PG&E just to
scratch the surface.
