my Speedstream 4060 USB DSL modem, so I won't be able to hook the modem up
directly to the Linux box, and will somehow have to network it through my
Windows 98 machine, which is what I'm using for internet access right now.
Have you tried drivers for Alcatel modems? Efficient is using their chip
set and Alcatel is reasonably well supported these days.

I think the best option is to buy an ethernet modem. That's what the
new SBC installations seem to be using, and there's more support for
them. I haven't priced them yet, but I don't expect they're more than
$75 or so, maybe $100 at the most..

If you can use one that gives you an ethernet connection, go for it. It's
easier to deal with all the way around...
