Well, I've finally gotten around to trying to load Linux on an old
Pentium II machine I had sitting around gathering dust, and have yet
to get it to install. I chose Redhat 9, since it's free, but have had
some trouble getting the install to run to completion. I keep getting
read errors on the CD when it's trying to install the perl and
openoffice packages. I'm currently creating a new CD written at only
2X instead of 4X to see if that might fix the problem, since the CD
drive in that machine is pretty old.

Aside from that, I discovered that there's no driver available to
handle my Speedstream 4060 USB DSL modem, so I won't be able
to hook the modem up directly to the Linux box, and will somehow have
to network it through my Windows 98 machine, which is what I'm using
for internet access right now.

Anyone know how I might go about telling the Linux box to use the
internet connection on my Windows 98 computer, and what I might
need to choose as far as installation options? I want to be able to
use a web browser and read email and newsgroups from the Linux
box as well as from the Windows box, and don't know how to proceed.

Can anyone around here help? If not, I'll subscribe to some Linux
groups to look for help, which is maybe what I should do to begin
with, but I seem to remember that several people around here are
experienced with Linux and Windows, so I thought I'd give it a shot
here first.

Your Win98 machine will not be able to share its internet connection
without the use of 3rd-party software, such as wingate. For what a copy
of wingate will cost, you may want to consider putting winXP on the PII
box. XP is the first version of windows that has Internet Connection
Sharing that really works.
The other alternative, of course, is to find a driver for your modem. I
suspect that there is probably one out there somewhere, if you dig.
BE WARNED: if you dabble with Linux, you will start to realize what a
sorry-***** OS Windows is. Then you will alternate between being frustrated
with the short comings of Windows, and the lack of widespread support for
Linux.
