Re: Pascal's Wager# 6456272525256272 (Re: Bible Contradictions) |
At some point in the past, J.R. <hey-joe@swbell.net> posted this drivel:
If you are still interested, I will go through any one of them that
you like. Or I will just choose one for you and explain it.
Well, I'd like to see another, one of your choice. But I do ask that
this time it not be full of holes like the Cana one.
Would you like to hear how he fed 5000 people with just 5 loafs of
bread and 7 fishes?
Oh oh I know this one.
In ancient times, when people planned to be out for the day, they would
often put food into "pockets" which were in their cloaks. When the members
of the multitude found that they had been gone longer than planned, many
people did not have food, but many did. The miracle here wasn't that Jesus
fed people on only 5 loaves and 7 fishes, but that the "haves" shared with
the "have-nots."

Shhhhhh, don't tell jr.

Wonderful. You and I concur - in those days and locations, one does
not wander far from home without food and water on his person.
So Jesus, as he brought out the love in each one's heart, caused the
hard hearted to demonstrate true love for his fellow human being.
And that is the very message of the new commandment Christ gave us in
John 13:34 - "love one another as God loves us".
However, as beautiful this story is, we still can't rule out the
willingness of our loving God to actually produce that food on his
own. So the miracle still stands as an answer.

You forget where Jesus got the 5 loaves and 7 fishes. From vendors.
What were the vendors doing there? Selling loaves and fishes.
The vendors were nearly out, so they must have sold out to the crowd.
Jesus bought the last of the loaves and fishes from those vendors that
couldn't sell out. (everyone had as much as they wanted.)
They picked up 12 baskets full of the trash that the on-lookers left
behind.

Why would that be any particular miracle? The probability that these people
were not well acquainted with each other was small and as pointed out, most
would have had food.
A minority of the majority who had food sharing with the minority of those
who forgot (and maybe didn't want to walk a mile or two home) would be
nothing unusual.

Sorry, meant to say "The 'miracle' here..."...miracle should have been
quote-marked :)

Tsk, tsk, mp - you and your Catholic School education. The bible
clearly says that people heard about Jesus and left their town(s) to
find him. What are you going to suggest now - that all people from
one town sat together to share their food? Sharing within a family
circle, I concur. But a stranger from next door, not likely. Until
they warmed up as Jesus called them to.
A minority of the majority who had food sharing with the minority of those
who forgot (and maybe didn't want to walk a mile or two home) would be

Oh, yes it would be unusual. The hard-hearted Hebrew is the very
reason Jesus gave them and us a *new* commandment - that we love one
another as God loves us.
You should have been paying attention at Catholic School instead of
reading the comic books.
