The problem with this analysis is that it rests on a fallacy:
since the Inquisiton was promoted by theists and the Killing Fields and
the Soviet Purges by athesists, both must have been inspired by their
religious disposition.
It's clear that the Inquisition was motivated primarily by a
particular interpretation of a religious belief. The belief was a
necessary precondition for the Inquisition; it was a foundation for
their ideology
On the other hand, it's also clear that atheism was not a
necessary precondition for the ideologies of the Khmer Rouge or the
Stalinist Soviet era. It was an expected outcome of their ideology, but
that was primarily as a side-effect.
