Re: Real Atheists? |

I was driving home today, and I saw a bumper sticker, it said:
Real atheists
don't wear shoes
Between the two lines was a simple line drawing of people swimming on
the surface of water.
For the life of me, I just don't get what message this bumper sticker is
trying to send. Is it pro-atheist, anti-theist, pro-theist, anti-atheist?
I just don't get it, anyone care to offer any insights? What am I missing?
.
Maybe it's about this? Apparently atheists were returning their shoes
in protest at a shoe company using an overt atheist-discriminator as
"consumer ambassador". In this case, the sticker could be pro-atheist.
But I'm not sure where the swimming comes in. I also don't find an
indication that the campaign came to anything, or ever mattered
particularly.
I'm gonna pop this to run in alt.atheism because it isn't yet proved to
relate to talk.origins.
http://www.sfatheists.com/activism/starjones.htm
------------------------------------------------
TV talk show personality Star Jones has publicly made prejudiced and
demeaning statements about Atheists, including saying she would never
vote for an Atheist. On April 24, 2002, the Atheists of Silicon
Valley, East Bay Atheists, and the San Francisco Atheists converged on
three Bay Area Payless ShoeSource stores (in San Jose, San Francisco,
and El Cerrito) to urge Payless ShoeSource to take a stand against
prejudice and drop Star Jones, their current consumer ambassador.
Pairs of used shoes were brought along for a mass mailing after the
event as a part of the Anti-Discrimination Support Network's "Walk a
Mile" campaign: letters of personal experiences about living as an
unbeliever in America will be sent with the shoes to Star Jones, along
with copies to Payless ShoeSource, to encourage them to walk a mile in
the shoes of an unbeliever before passing judgment. Jones has
acknowledged the protests, but she has yet to offer any apology.

On reflection, it could be to do with scepticism as to whether
evolution actually does us any good (and thus t.o matter). "Many were
increasingly of the opinion that they had all made a big mistake in
coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even
the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left
the oceans."
Another possibility is something to do with New Orleans?
For instance
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=46159
"The American Atheists organization says President Bush should stop
urging prayer for Hurricane Katrina victims because it violates the
Constitution. [...] Dave Silverman, communications director for
American Atheists, went even further - blaming God for taking
thousands of lives both in the Asian tsunami lat year and again in the
Gulf Coast. 'It appears that despite all of the outbursts of public
religiosity and prayer, "God" was once again asleep at the wheel,' he
said."
That's telling 'em!
