Why would anyone need a "spiritual guide"?

Because humans have evolved with a "religion center" in their brain,
and - depending on its size - they must fill it with something.
Note that my sentence uses "evolution" as its framework, to explain
spiritual ideals in a format your religion center will accept. ;-)
