Underground search suspended after 3 die in Utah mine
Drilling continues in hopes of finding the 6 trapped men
Dan Frosch,N.R. Kleinfield, New York Times
(08-18) 04:00 PDT Huntington, Utah --
A sense of doleful finality settled Friday over the quivering mountain
here that swallowed six coal miners 11 days ago.
Underground search efforts aimed at finding them were suspended
indefinitely after crumbling tunnel walls inside the Crandall Canyon
Mine killed two rescue workers and a federal mine inspector Thursday
night.
With grim-faced authorities baffled over when, or whether, fresh teams
can be sent in, the reality sank in among the hushed residents here
that the six men, trapped 1,800 feet beneath the surface, might never
be found.
"People here are just sick in the stomach about all of this," said
Joanne Carpenter, whose son was friends with the son of Dale Black,
one of the rescuers killed.
The Thursday evening cave-in, in which six other rescuers were
injured, one critically, is being seen as a final affront to a huge
operation already plagued by a mountain that has refused to sit still.
Precipitated by the latest in a succession of earth movements, the new
collapse raised troubling questions about not only the safety of the
mine, but the wisdom of the treacherous rescue operation.
Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, issued
a statement saying the deaths were "needless and preventable." Roberts
has been a persistent critic of operations at the mine, which is not
unionized.
At a news conference almost drowned out by explosive thunder and rain,
state and federal authorities appeared shocked by the abrupt turn of
events.
Richard Stickler, director of the Mine Safety and Health
Administration, said the strongest available support structure had
been put in place to protect the rescuers, including fencing and steel
buttresses, but said, "Obviously, it was not adequate."
Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said he did not want additional teams to
descend into the mine unless it can be adequately fortified, though
drilling from the surface is to continue.
"We have already experienced enough in terms of pain," Huntsman said.
Huntsman promised to conduct an "unprecedented and comprehensive"
investigation of the disaster and rescue work and to seek to improve
mine conditions in Utah and across the country.
In describing Thursday night's accident, Stickler said tons of rock in
what is called a mountain bump had settled over the mine tunnel and
caused walls to fall. Rescuers at a depth of 2,000 feet, he said, were
battered by shooting coal and debris when 30 feet of a "rib" or wall
exploded.
He said that he could not know whether there was a way to resume
underground rescue work and that mine safety experts were being
summoned to Utah for advice.
Of the six injured rescuers, three remain hospitalized. The dead were
identified as Black, whose age was not immediately known, Brandon
Kimber, 29, an inspector for the Mine Safety and Health
Administration, and Gary Jensen, 53, who was based in Price, Utah.
The intense attempt to burrow into the collapsed mine shaft to find
the trapped miners was from the beginning fraught with risk. The
mountain has been experiencing seismic jolts since the start of the
assignment. Seismic specialists at the University of Utah in Salt Lake
City have recorded 22 readings of earth movement at the site since the
original 3.9 magnitude shock.
There has been no indication that the miners are alive.
For the moment, all that remains active of efforts to find the miners
is surface boring. Three bore holes had been drilled into the mine but
found no sign of life. A fourth hole is expected to be completed
today.

Retreat Mining has been around since the creation of underground
mining. MSHA has been regulating it more and more. I am willing to

of Clintons. A fact that has nothing to do with Presidential

Hogwash. The only energy resource the US has in abundance is coal. It's
the one resource we could actually *afford* leaving those last tons alone
a while to give mining technology a chance to catch up.
No, *Murray* was trying to "eek out every last" dollar. And he's *still*
lying through his teeth about a "seismic event" causing the collapse. He
also seems oblivious to the concept of "video recording" as he was caught
talking about reopening parts of the mine then tried to claim he'd never
even think about such a thing.
In fact, he's quite the serial liar:
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_6685703
"Robert Murray insists that his company did not change the mining plan at
Crandall Canyon after purchasing a joint interest in the mine last
August. But documents obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune clearly
contradict Murray's assertion, and show that Murray's company sought and
received approval from federal regulators to make a significant, and,
experts say, risky change to the mining strategy."
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_6717366
"...not all of his employees or former employees are big Murray fans,
said Dale Lee, a trucker who has been affiliated with the mining industry
for decades.
"I don't have too high of an opinion of him," Lee said. "His main
interest is getting coal out of that mine and getting money. I don't
think he cares about the miners all that much, to tell you the truth."

They had an item on TV last night. If I'm not mistaken, they said that
in the 6 years before Bush was elected, there were no fatal coal mine
accidents. Since Bush was elected there have been 7 incidents.
Ayup.
I think that record speaks for itself...

Retreat Mining has been around since the creation of underground
mining. MSHA has been regulating it more and more. I am willing to
bet more retreat mining plans are rejected under this admin then that
of Clintons. A fact that has nothing to do with Presidential
administration.

This project was approved by a Bush recess appointment. A recess
appointment being necessary because even *Rupublicans* didn't want the
man around. An attitude in part because the guy being appointed had a bad
safty record when he was in the industry.
The Bush admin approved the project. People died.
This has been a pattern for this administration.
