There is a list of the atheists that post to alt.atheism. One can go
to the
web site and asked to be put on the list. That's my number on the
list.

can anyone explain more about that list?
Years ago, around about '97, a guy named Jim Nichols claimed there were
only three atheists in the newsgroup (even while more than three people
were replying to his posts, go figure). People thought this was
hysterically funny and joked about a "roll call."
Michelle Malkin started compiling a "list" of atheists and agnostics who
were regular around the newsgroup, meaning--near as I can tell from the
Google archives--to compile about 300 (100 times what Nichols claimed).
But it took off on her. The list became popular in itself and grew by
leaps and bounds. And started taking on, over time, an aspect of "stand up
and be counted" for atheists and agnostics.
It's not *deathly serious nor something "official" but is a kind of public
declaration of where one stands. And rather a response to people like
Nichols who try to claim there aren't "that many" atheists/agnostics
around.
I mean, I've been around almost seven years now and my number is 1423. The
list is up around (or beyond) 2200 now. And that's *just the people who
bother to join. Not everybody does...
