Ok, if it does explode in 5 minutes, how long will it take before we
actually know about it.
distance to sun / speed of light = time
1.5 x 10^11 m / 3 x 10^8 m/s = 500 secs or 8+ minutes

Actually, if it starts out as an intense burst of gamma and X rays we will feel
it before we see it.

The infrared radiation, which will boil us, and the light, which will
blind us, and the other radiation, which will ionize us, will all
arrive at the same time. The plasma from inside the exploding sun will
take it's sweet time to get here.
