All religion is nothing more than an attempt to control a population
by enforcing 'laws' that come from a higher authority that is beyond
challenge, It is used as an extremely powerful tool to keep people 'in
line'. It is particularly useful in circumstances where the population
are under duress, be it poverty, starvation, tyranny. whatever,
because then the powers that rule will assure you that you must accept
your lot, lead a good life, don't rock the boat and cause any trouble,
and you will be rewarded in the next life.

Not all religion. Back when the Prehistoric Great Mother Goddess was
the accepted concept in SE Europe, they had thousands of years of
peace. One reason is easily understood when you consider the problem a
demagogue would have trying to rile up a mob or an army by claiming
that *he* speaks in *HER* name.
Quite naturally, the power structure was modeled on the cosmology, so
they were ruled by women. But since the queen did not need a harem,
she didnt need a palace to keep them in, nor a castle to protect the
palace. And moreover, she didnt need to tax the ***** out of everyone
to pay for it.
The other thing we notice about the cities run by the queens from this
tradition, is that there are no slums.
