This came to mind when I was reading John Wilkins' (an Australian)

Of course I did (thanks for asking), here in Britain, as I sat in the

Anyone in the world who cares about science should care about American
education.
Anyone who fears a worldwide descent into an age where all recorded
information is political, should care about science.
Unlike religion, scientific knowledge is independently verifiable. It
knows no civic boundaries. No matter what the scientist's religion, if
they use the scientific method, they get the same result. It is an
international effort that relies on contributors from all cultures. The
same facts gained against the backdrop of a multitude of cultures is
the hallmark of honest discovery.
That aside, the United States is a large influencial thing in general,
and the relative education and outlook of its inhabitants is of general
interest to the world's intelligentsia.
