What Happened to Cheap Postwar Oil?
http://www.businessweek.com:/print/bwdaily/dnflash/aug2003/nf2003086_6778_db035.htm?pi
Combine a creeping comeback for Iraqi crude with plenty of other
supply and inventory troubles, and what you get is $30 a barrel
In the three anxious months leading up to the Iraq war, oil prices
soared by 25%, to more than $37 a barrel. Despite the alarming rise,
many energy experts were quick to argue that a fast and decisive
victory would send oil tumbling below $25 for the rest of the year.

Paying the price
http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/journalist/story/0,7792,1036206,00.html
Even if the UN takes on a bigger role in Iraq, George Bush's prewar
tactics mean that Iraq will remain primarily an American problem,
writes Simon Tisdall
Friday September 5, 2003
If the Bush administration is expecting grateful thanks for its
proposal to give the UN a bigger role in Iraq, it is going to be
sorely disappointed. If the White House thinks that as a result,
foreign peacekeeping forces and funds will soon be flooding into
occupied Iraq, it will likely be disappointed about that, too.

Outlook: The Price of War
http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/zforum/03/r_outlook_dallek092603.htm
With Robert Dallek
Historian
Friday, September 26, 2003; 2:30 p.m ET
Just six months into the current conflict in Iraq, there is growing
skepticism of assurances by President Bush that seem all too
reminiscent of President Johnson's upbeat, but ultimately
unconvincing, rhetoric about Vietnam. In the Outlook section this
Sunday (The Challenge of Planting the Seed of Democracy in Iraq),
renowned historian Robert Dallek says that no one who knows anything
about America's failed war in Vietnam would argue that the struggle
with Iraq is just like the Vietnam conflict. Still, Dallek says, the
history of American public resistance to past wars that have cost the
country significant numbers of lives and amounts of money should
persuade the Bush administration that its days in power are numbered
unless it finds a solution to the current challenge.
The Challenge of Planting the Seed of Democracy in Iraq
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5337-2003Sep26.html
By Robert Dallek
Winston Churchill complained that democracy is the worst possible
system, except for all the rest. Yet democracy's unwieldiness and
inconveniences, not its relative virtues, must be very much on the
mind of President Bush at the moment. In both Iraq and the United
States, political realities are schooling him in the difficulties that
American presidents have always faced in trying to plant
U.S.-cultivated institutions in foreign soil while simultaneously
mustering domestic support for overseas policies that carry
significant costs in blood and treasure.
Powell Suggests Six Month Timeline for New Iraqi Constitution

Elections Would Be Held Six Months Later
The Associated Press
Friday, September 26, 2003; 2:00 PM
UNITED NATIONS -- Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United
States would like Iraqi leaders to produce a new constitution in six
months, paving the way for elections perhaps six months later and a
return to self-rule.
