James Ussher was wrong, but no idiot. He did his work in the middle of
the 17th century. It was only centuries later that better
understanding of geology and chemistry led people to suspect that the
Earth was much much older. And it's only been since Darwin that we have
a natural (as opposed to super-natural) explanation for the complex
design evident in life. In Ussher's day anyone claiming that the
universe was 15 billion years old would have correctly been considered a
crackpot.
We shouldn't judge Ussher by the fact that he was wrong, but instead by
the quality of his argument given the evidence available to him.

Look at it the other way, Pythagoras was right to claim that the Earth
and heavenly bodies were spherical. But his reasons for the belief were
down-right silly. When evaluating a historical figure, being wrong or
right is far less interesting than the quality of the argument.

Look... Jeff.... the ancients knew the Earth was round in 500
B.C..... all you need to do is look at the Earth's shadow
on the moon to know that.... some guy in Alexandria
(name escapes me) actually MEASURED the diameter
of the Earth a few hundred years B.C. by finding out
the Sun was directly overhead of a 100 foot deep well
in a town 500 miles south of him on a certain day of the year,
... and on that day he went outdoors and measured the
angle of a shadow of a flagpole and calculated the
Earth's diameter to withing 10% accuracy....
in 300 B.C.! Naturally none of the world's idiots could
understand trigonometry so they went on thinking the
Earth was flat.
The entire world went on swearing the Earth
was FLAT for another 1800 years until Magellen
sailed the Golden Hind around the world, got off the
ship in London, and anonounced the "world was round".
for chrissakes..... the SAME IS TRUE OF GOD...
some Nazerene peasant figured out what it was
2,000 years ago and created the biggest stir the
world has ever seen.... and YET, here we are
2,000 years later and only a handful of intellectuals
(like Mary Baker Eddy, the Pope and yours
truly) actually know what God is.

sail around the world, but I've found a SIMPLE
SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION (PROOF)

peer review of your "Scientific Proof" turn up? Perhaps you
forgot to carry a one somewhere and your "Scientific Proof
of God" turns out to be a Scientific Proof of Satan.

What is more, people who argued against Columbus knew the size of the
earth, which had been closely approximated from classical times. The
knew he could not reach China by sailing west - not because he would
sail off the edge of the world, but because he could not carry
sufficient provisions - and they were right. Columbus seriously
underestimated the size of the earth. He never reached China. If he
had not bumped into some islands, he and all of his crew would have
died of thirst or starvation.

GOD: "What the heck, let's put these artifacts here. Hell - let's put
these big fossilized lizard bones underground, PLUS a record of species
changing over imaginary millions of years. Yeah - that will mess with
them. They'll build these public buildings and reassemble the made-up
"ancient" lizards - wouldn't that be a laugh!"

Eratosthanes (sp?). Yes, some people had very good arguments for why
the Earth was round. But, as I said, Pythagoras was not among them.
