Many of us are interested.

People interested in his politiking can still remain interested in an appropriate
newsgroup. It's wrong to post it here on alt.atheism because it is off topic.
So, why not go elsewhere, then? I mean, surely, even a halfwit knows that
when posting about, say, his love affair with Fidel Castro he's not to do it on
talk.origins?

You need to learn how a.a. operates. Yes, it's an atheist newsgroup. But
we've pretty much defined the topic in here as "anything we want to discuss
at the moment." We don't talk much about atheism simply because for us it's
not much of a conversation starter.
"Hi."
"Hello."
"I'm an atheist."
"Cool, so am I. So...how many times have you seen 'The Life of Brian?' "
<conversation morphs into two atheists reciting their favorite lines from
that movie, then any of the other "standard" films>.
If all we talked about were atheism, there wouldn't be a lot of traffic,
except for the bible-thumpers trying to monopolize us. And we won't have
that.
So.
How many times have you seen "The Holy Grail" ?

You need to learn how a.a. operates. Yes, it's an atheist newsgroup. But
we've pretty much defined the topic in here as "anything we want to discuss
at the moment." We don't talk much about atheism simply because for us it's
not much of a conversation starter.

In one respect you are correct. I mean, Atheism is not a philosophy of
any kind, right? An atheist denotes a person, who for whatever reason,
does not accept the existence of supernatural authorities. That's all.
He/She may accept anything else under the Sun which might be wonderfully
rational or diabolically irrational. So there's seemingly nothing much that
atheists have in common which they can talk about. But most manage it
because religion does have a direct impact on them, like how they're
treated in a predominately theistic society, why they chose to be atheists,
the never-ending struggle to keep Church and State separate, the
sheep-like mentality of believers and the vileness of their religious doctrine.
And we can criticise religion all we want since the only thing that gives
atheism any meaning is theism --- we define ourselves by an attribute they
lack which is a totally secular mind. Not necessarily a rational mind, but a
secular one. So there is plenty to talk about that is atheist related . I was
here in 93/94 when the term BAWA was created by Tony someone... I've
long since forgotten his surname. Always had enormous respect for him
and his firery tongue lashings against certain Christians & Christianity in
general, but the point is, there was none of the political ranting *****
that you see here today. It was a hotbed of conversation, debate and
flamewars, but confined to the topic of atheism and theism. What maff
posts is democrat vs conservative *****, or his war vs anti-war rantings
which has nothing to do with being an atheist. His posts don't belong here.
Cheers,
Tony.

Count me as a vote for Maff; he marks his postings as OT and he does so in
a newsgroup where politics is a topic of interest for most of the regulars.
