No, NASA does not need to do so. If NASA had been launching a spaceship
at the time of the event, then they would have calculated it at that
time. Since the earth is not standing still now, they can plan a normal
launch based on the earth's normal spin....adjusted for the time lost at
the time of the tsunami.

Pangur,
The earth would not have had to stop its rotation in order for the
event at Joshua 10:12-14 to have occurred. The details were covered in
my answer to Thagor:
"Notice nothing in that account says that the 'earth stood still',
rather it says those luminaries did. (the sun and moon appeared to do
so from an observer on the ground there) Many today extrapolate that
the earth must have stopped its rotation in order for that event to
have happened. But that is their reasoning, and doesn't have to be the
way it really happened.
Also, if the earth literally miraculously stopped rotating, this would
be a world-wide event. Yet there is no indication elsewhere in the
writings of the world, that such a thing happened anywhere else. (that
is, assuming all survived the stopped rotation!) So that event
appeared to have happened only there in the area of Gibeon.
So how could it have happened without anything to do with a stopping
of the earth's rotation? One possibility would be for God to
continually refract the sunlight back to a central point in the sky
over Gibeon, even as it was setting. (the same with the moon) Humans
do something similar with their geosynchronous orbits of their
satellites. They make the satellite stay in one relative position over
a certain latitude and longitude. Thus signals can be bounced off that
satellite 24/7 from that same location. The satellite in effect, is
'motionless' relative to the ground, and stays in that same spot in
the sky. So it wouldn't be too hard to conceive God using a similar
method to accomplish His will by refracting the light of those
luminaries. After all, God created those luminaries. (Ps 74:16)
At any rate, the Bible does not tell the mechanics of how God did that
marvelous event. It just tells the results.
Sincerely, James

Rather like Noah's flood.
(that is, assuming all survived the stopped rotation!) So that event
appeared to have happened only there in the area of Gibeon.

of the earth's rotation? One possibility would be for God to

Seems an awful lot of work to create something very local in scope. Why
not just set a bush to burning?
At any rate, the Bible does not tell the mechanics of how God did that

Uh-huh. James, I am going to answer you as politely as I can. My
original answer to Thagor was much in the "tone" that one would offer to
a very young child or to a retarded adult. It was an attempt to
reassure... That someone could apparently seriously ask such a question
in the 21st centruy indicated to me that I was reading a post by an
extremely credulous individual....and that is quite polite.
Second, I think the myth of the sun and moon standing still - no matter
what fantasies are concocted to explain it - is silly.
Third, the bible is to me a series of poorly written histories (some
based on reality and some not), myths, and legends, adaptations of
elements common to many religions - miracles, virgin births,
resurrections, - and much man-created attempts to make their beliefs
important and acceptable.
Fourth, my religion holds that your god is a part of the total
Divinity.... an aspect like many others.
Thank you for your reply.
Pangur - nonchristian theist

Whoops, you seem to be in error with your claim of it being a local
event. Unless you have read the ancient writings, you probably ought
not comment on them....
""Many cultures have legends that seem to be based on this event. For
example, there is a Greek myth of Apollo's son, Phaethon, who
disrupted the sun's course for a day. Since Joshua 10 is historical,
cultures on the opposite side of the world should have legends of a
long night. In fact, the New Zealand Maori people have a myth about how
their hero Maui slowed the sun before it rose, while the Mexican Annals
of Cuauhtitlan (the history of the empire of Culhuacan and Mexico)
records a night that continued for an extended time."" (stolen from a
research web page)
Velikovsky did yeomans work on researching the miracles of the Bible,
and the effects as recorded throughout the world. If you read Worlds in
Collision, you will find that you are wrong, and that many cultures
record the stopping of the rotation of the earth, or the lengthening of
the day. Don't make declarations that are so easy to refute :-)
Once does not have to agree with Velikovsky's personal opinions, to
know that his research on ancient writings is valid, and well
documented. It is fascinating to read the global conditions and results
of many bible incidents, on the pages of other civilizations, such as
the Exodus, the Birth and death of the Savior, etc.

When I was in High School (about 16 or 17) we had a joke making the
rounds - something like "there are more crazy people all the time, so
the ratio of crazy people to sane people is constantly increasing.
Soon the crazy people will outnumber the sane people, so let's destroy
the world before they lock us up and destroy it".
I've finally lived long enough to see it.

LOL! Oh, yes, yes it is ;)
Profound mental illness is NOT a joke, Robyn.
But it's not nice to point out to 3 whole newsgroups that they're all
mentally ill, Michael.
No, they might demand that they have a say in running the world.
Then where would we be?
When I was in High School (about 16 or 17) we had a joke making the
rounds - something like "there are more crazy people all the time, so
the ratio of crazy people to sane people is constantly increasing.
Soon the crazy people will outnumber the sane people, so let's destroy
the world before they lock us up and destroy it".
I've finally lived long enough to see it.
It's not because we have advanced, but more that we are being
retarded, dragged back to the middle-ages.
Dragged back to ignorant superstition, deliberately engineered for the
short term comfort and power of a tiny minority of humans.

Cluster bombs in southern Lebanon:
an Israeli reservist speaks out
Hundreds of thousands of unexploded
and potentially lethal cluster bombs
are lying scattered in fields and
villages in southern Lebanon following
the recent fighting between Israel
and Hezbollah.
On the programme today we have
an exclusive radio interview with
a former Israeli artilleryman,
now a reservist,
who tells us why he regrets
firing cluster bomb rockets
into Lebanon.
We also speak to Major Avital
Leibovitch from the Israeli
Defence Force and we get an update
from the Mines Advisory Group,
whose teams are helping to clear
unexploded ordinance in southern
Lebanon

Well, let's see how actual physics works. The force needed to make
the sun rotate at a rate of one orbit/day would tear the Solar system
apart. The speed of the sun would be close to the speed of light,
destroying all nearby galaxies.
Since we're here, yes, the evidence that it never happened is pretty
plain.
God is the Creator of the Universe, he can do this. This is no joke.
Aside from violating most laws of physics - and that can't be done due
to the way the universe is (due to the fact that he created it that
way, if that's what you believe) - there's no way it could have
happened. You can't accelerate trillions of tons of mass to a speed
close to C without causing all sorts of nearby effects. "Inertialess
drive" is science fiction, not reality. And you can't get the energy
needed to cause that acceleration from space close enough to not
destroy galaxies.
If God can violate causality (the only way it could have been done)
that gives you another problem - a god that can violate causality
isn't limited by logic, so God either can create a mass too large for
him to move (meaning he's not omnipotent) or he can't create a mass
too large for him to move (meaning he's not omnipotent).
See, the Christian definition of God is of a god that just can't
exist. If he can violate logic he can't exist as defined by
Christianity and if he can't violate logic he can't exist as defined
by Christianity.
Someone, 2,000 years ago, just didn't know enough about logic to
create a god that could actually exist. That's why writers are always
admonished to write about what they know. Writing about things you
don't know anything about (in literature, that genre is known as
'fantasy') leads you into little traps like setting up impossible
situations. In Piers Anthony's novels it's a cute device, but when
you claim that it's non-fiction you trip over your own feet.
So your only out is to claim that God can do anything, even 10
mutually exclusive things at the same time - which is just invoking
magic, which is nonsense. We know that the laws of physics are the
same all over, so accelerating that much mass to that speed in that
small a time just ain't gonna happen, god or no god, unless you're
writing a fairy tale - which is all the Bible is, anyway. No sane
person believes that it's all literally true.

Apparently not.
I suspect that at some point there must be a most insane idea of how all
physics was ignored (and faith lost) but every time I think I've seen it,
something like this comes along.
Maybe it is elephants all the way down.
