A Test of Kerry's Faith
The candidate's policies are at odds with church canon. Will there be a
price to pay?
Paul Martin and Jean Chretien are still incommunicated with no
excommunication on the horizon. Kerry is far more right wing than even
Martin. I don't expect an excommunication.

I don't either.
I do think it's interesting that 40 years ago, when we had
our first (and so far only) Catholic president, the big fear
among some people was that he would follow the Pope's orders
rather than act in the interests of the U.S. Now it's
turned around, at least a little: Sen. Kerry is being
criticized for *not* accepting the Pope's teachings.
Having said that, it's a fair criticism to make of Kerry.
He has traded on his Catholicism and allowed people to
believe he was of Irish descent in order to advance his
political career for at least a generation, while running
for office in a state where Irish Catholics are a large and
important voting block. Now that he's running for
*national* office, he has suddenly "discovered" he has
Jewish ancestry. But he's still Catholic, of course -- he
just doesn't follow a lot of the most important tenets of
his church.

He's no more Catholic than my hamster. In the eyes of Rome he must
surely be a heretic.

In the eyes of Rome, every US president other than Kennedy was a heretic.
After all, they were all Protestants.

Not all. The first half dozen presidents weren't even Christians.

But Bush enthusiastically supports the death penalty and invaded Iraq after the
pope asked him not to - I guess there's no good choice for a good Catholic
this time.
