It is the room where Michael Faraday first harnessed the power of
electricity, where Humphry Davy revealed the miners' lamp, and where
John Tyndall explained why the sky is blue and the greenhouse effect
bad. Now, the 200-year-old mahogany amphitheatre is to play host to
simpler folk who have nonetheless struggled with life's great
questions, those who after much pondering and experimentation have
reached the conclusion that it's finally time to tie the knot.
The Royal Institution in London has concluded that closing its doors at
weekends is no way to make money, and lacking any government handouts -
a predicament its director, Baroness Susan Greenfield, believes is
crucial to maintaining its historic independence - has been dreaming up
new ways to make the books balance. Seizing on the alarming trend for
ever-wackier wedding venues is a move of appropriate genius.
