Religion and science are about separate things |
Religion and science cover completely separate areas of knowledge.
Science is used to find out cold, hard physical truth in a systematic
way.
Religion is used to regulate human behaviour and give people a sense
of purpose and community.
Science has no business telling people how they should act, live or
for what purpose. It offers very little in this area.
Likewise, religion has no business telling people where they came from
or about any supernatural occurrences or beings. There is no hard
evidence for any of these things.
They are as different as social studies and physics.
Some people are free thinkers and will create their own belief system
based on the best of the others they are exposed to.
Other people just believe what their parents believe.
Some people don't believe anything.
Some people shop around for pre-packaged belief system so they don't
have to do any thinking for themselves.
Maybe a new religion should be started based on scientific principles
of human origin, how the world works, etc. combined with the best and
least repressive humanitarian aspects from all world religions with a
weekly meeting place for a sense of community and common purpose.
The Mormons started their own during the last century, minus the
science.

A new religion would be a new world religion. The sense of community and
regulation of conduct that characterizes all religion would have to be
extended to include harmony and union among all of humanity. This is
something which has not been the express purpose of any previous religion,
but is that of the Baha'i.

Religion does indeed have business telling people where they
came from, and about supernatural occurrences and beings. In
fact, religion is all about supernatural beings, or agents.
That doesn't mean that we should believe what religion tells
us, though!
They are as different as social studies and physics.
If you keep up with the state of the art in the study of
culture (society), you may discover that there is an ongoing
effort to explain it in terms of physics.

Why bother with having a religion? a philosphy to live by
should be good enough, there is no need for the supernatural
agency that religion brings to the table.
(my idea of what constitutes religion may differ from yours)

Your table is not my table. In terms of physics they are described as being
identical. In terms of morality, they are described by a supernatural agency.
