The best thing my mother, a seriously religious woman, ever did for me was
to force me to go to Sunday school, and then, as a young teenager, to church
on a Sunday, when all I wanted to do was to go looking for tadpoles or to go
canoeing on the local lake. The religious stuff was boring beyond belief.
I have her to thank for making me an atheist at the age of about 9. I knew
even then that there were better things in life than sitting indoors in a
church on a sunny day singing hymns.
As a by-the-bye, why don't children from Muslim families rebel, since it
must be just as boring for them going for prayer sessions in a mosque as it
was for me and many other young "Christian" children. I have never
understood how they can waste time praying five times a day. I have never
understood why it is for them that atheism doesn't call.

The Muslim world hasn't had the access to secular/scientific culture
that we Americans are immersed in, and their societies are still
pretty traditional (close-knit families and communities, education
controlled by clerics), making it harder for them to think
independently.

Whether it calls them or not, Moslems still believe in stoning. Pray
or be stoned to death ... pray or be stoned to death ... difficult
choice.

You certainly have a point there, Al. Every time I see a photo of a load of
men in a mosque, there is often a little kid among them, but he's just
trying to keep up with his elders. I can't believe he'd know about being
stoned to death...but you never know...
Somehow these people inculcate the acceptance of boredom in their kids.
Which is why maybe they're not very bright when it comes to thinking for
themselves. Ideas are not appreciated in Islam.

<snip>
Way back whenever children could still legally be whipped for no
reason at all, they were -much- more attentive during services than
they are these days. Those children don't have the -luxury- of being
"bored" by their religion. It's just not a concept that could even
occur to most of them.

They strap bombs onto their babies and pass them off to "infidels",
and you think they'd try to protect their children from knowledge of
stoning?

Ideas are not appreciated in most fundamentalist circles, be they
centered around Islam, Christianity or an atheistic philosophies.
Fundamentalism of all stripes - not just religious - it's as
anti-knowledge as the human mind is capable of producing. Religion is
the -easiest- thing to form a fundamentalist ideology around because
you can toss reason totally to the wind, but it's not the only thing
that can be used in such a scheme. Sports can, also, as well as
patriotism, family, etc... etc... etc.... - all of which -can- be good
things, until their power is placed into the hands of the wicked.

Of course, in churches you see little kids too. But they're there
because they know that God exists, right?

Somehow these people inculcate the acceptance of boredom in their kids.

Yeah, a Christian 4-year-old is SO much smarter than a Moslem
4-year-old. I mean he can speak English and everything ...

The common cold is more of a complex societal phenomenom (sic) than
something that just affects an individual (sick).
