Religion on Display in National Parks: ; Christian Fundamentalist
Influence on Park Service Decisions - "Faith-Based Parks" Decried
From the article:
-------------------------------
This fall, the Park Service also approved a creationist text, "Grand
Canyon: A Different View" for sale in park bookstores and museums. The
book by Tom Vail, claims that the Grand Canyon is really only a few
thousand years old, developing on a biblical rather than an
evolutionary time scale. At the same time, Park Service leadership has
blocked publication of guidance for park rangers and other
interpretative staff that labeled creationism as lacking any
scientific basis.

FYI, a letter has been sent to the Grand Canyon NP superintendent
objecting to the sale of that YEC publication in Grand Canyon
bookstores. I haven't seen the letter itself, but I have
a list of the signatories (which I've reproduced below):
William J. Auswich, President of the Paleontological Society
Robert E. Dickinson, President of the American Geophysical Union
Cathryn A. Manduca, President of the National Association
of Geoscience Teachers
John C. Steinmetz, President of the Association of American State
Geologists
Hans-Dieter Sues, President of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology
Barbara J. Tewksbury, President American Geological Institute
Robert van der Voo, President of the Geological Society of America.
If these folks don't get some satisfaction from the National Park
Service, I'm pretty confident that they'll ratchet up the pressure. :)
