Religious deception - deliberate vs naturally evolved |
Religion is perhaps the perfect tool with which to manipulate an intelligent
social species such as humanity. As such, certainly its utility as a means of
social manipulation has been harnessed by some individuals throughout history
and beyond. Sometimes, it can be certain that a religious meme is deliberately
created by someone solely for the purpose of exerting social control.
Sometimes, however, an individual is simply using for social control a meme
which has emerged naturally during the cultural evolution of a given society.
How much religion do you suppose stems purely from deliberately spawned lies and
how much do you suppose has come about through natural cultural evolution?
I'm sure there are many, many blurry lines clouding the issue. But I suspect
some of the more key and enduring components of religion were deliberate
contrivances designed not because their fabricators believed them to be true,
but because it suited the purposes of their fabricators for -others- to believe
them to be true. And in some cases, this has probably been a vital thing done
perhaps not for the sake of control, but perhaps by a particularly insightful
individual for the purpose of averting some sort of catastrophe or atrophy.
