Start the year off right!
Publish Date: 01/04/05
OK, you've taken down the decorations, put away the tree, and gotten some
half-priced Christmas cards for next year.
The New Year's been good so far but something's missing. What could it be?
Mmnn ... I know, you haven't read anything this year that's offended you.
I can help. I'm a well-rounded columnist. It's my duty to begin the year by
inundating the News Post editor with Kathy Afzali hate mail.
Hence, I'll begin the year off right by paying tribute to the free, the
brave, and the easily offended.
Let's start with immigrants. I will preface this by saying that my husband
is an immigrant so don't send the, "fear-mongering racist" e-mails, OK?
Why don't many immigrant groups want to melt into the "melting pot"? If
their culture and homeland were so great, why are they here?
What's more, I don't think any ballot in any American city should be
written in any language other than English. If an immigrant has no interest
in learning our language, he or she shouldn't be voting.
Furthermore, all immigrants in all groups should pass a personal hygiene
test. If you're not bathing at least three times per week your green card
should be revoked. Many Americans are smelly enough -- let's not add more.
Next, there's Kwanzaa. I sat through my daughter's first grade "holiday"
program and never heard the word Christmas mentioned. I learned all about
Kwanzaa the, created-in-1966-by-a-California-activist holiday. I lived in
New York just a few blocks from Harlem and never met a person of color who
celebrates this.
I try to be open minded about most things, so I invite any African-American
readers to e-mail me and let me know their feelings about this holiday. To
me it feels like an exclusive club that white girls aren't welcome to join.
Next, there's obesity. Yes, you heard me -- exceptionally fat people. Why
is it that you can tell a smoker to quit, you can tell a friend to say no
to drugs, but you can't tell the obese that eating a whole cheesecake will
kill them?
Studies have shown that grossly overweight people are less healthy and
productive than their slimmer counterparts. With obesity and weight gain
the leading cause of death in the U.S., don't you think it's time for some
tough-love?
I recognize that some have medical challenges and can't lose, but the rest
of you need to put down the cheese fries. Allowing someone to eat himself
to death is not political correctness.
Next, let's shine a light on religion. Oh, this is tough. So much to say,
so little space. Religious fanatics cause so much trouble.
Muslims, what's with the 12 virgins in heaven theory? It's difficult to
have compassion for any group or faith that allows fanatics to shoot
children and their mothers in an elementary school. Stop it!
Jews, I realize you have been persecuted in the past but my generation is
eclectic. Mel Gibson's "The "Passion of the Christ" is not anti-Semitic.
It's a Jewish story with good guys and bad guys. You're oversensitive. Stop
it!
Christians -- you won't escape me either: What's with the, "My Christianity
is better than your Christianity?" Nothing turns people off to Christ
faster than "holier than thou" bickering. Stop it!
Whew ... nothing starts the year off better than a good purge. I apologize
if I didn't offend your group today. I'm out of space, but I'll try to
accommodate you in a future column.

PS David edited this column. I was more direct and brutally honest before
editing. He's nicer than me. I'm working on hosting a radio show. No group
will be safe when husband isn't there to edit.
