Object: Remember "Family Values" Don Sherwood?
Sherwood is expected to face Democrat Chris Carney of Susquehanna
County in the November 2006 election.
"Don Sherwood promised us that he would represent our family values in
Washington," Carney said in a statement released Tuesday night.
"While he has settled his lawsuit, he has irrevocably broken his trust
with the voters. He has revealed his character, his judgment, and his
values. With these revelations, how can the people of Pennsylvania
trust Don Sherwood?"
Ore and her former lead attorney, Patrick Regan, did not immediately
return calls for comment Tuesday.
Sherwood also could not be reached.
Ore, a native of Peru who has said she came to the United States with
her family when she was in her teens, filed the $5.5 million assault
and battery lawsuit against the 64-year-old Sherwood in June.
It alleged years of abuse by the married congressman, who admits to
having a five-year affair with Ore, but denies ever assaulting her.
The lawsuit stated Sherwood repeatedly struck Ore on her face, neck,
chest and back; violently yanked her hair; and tried to strangle her
by placing his hands around her neck.
It also says Sherwood threatened to harm Ore if she talked to police
about the alleged abuse.
Police responded to Sherwood’s Washington apartment on Sept. 15, 2004,
after Ore called 911 to report the congressman had assaulted and
choked her.
Police who responded to the scene didn’t file charges, saying Ore and
Sherwood weren’t forthcoming about what had happened.
In a police report, police said Ore didn’t seem to be of "sound mind"
and said she changed her story, which she has denied.
A second set of officers was flagged down by Ore and a friend later
that night at a McDonald’s after Ore went to Suburban Hospital in
Bethesda, Md. for her injuries, she said.
She told officers Sherwood assaulted her and that police who responded
to her 911 call didn’t take her claims seriously.
Israel Ruiz, a Metropolitan police officer who took photos of Ore
during that second investigation, told the Times Leader he believed
Sherwood should have been arrested.
He said the congressman was given preferential treatment because of
his political position.
