Attorney General Mike Cox admitted Wednesday that he had an
extra-marital affair several years ago. He told reporters that a
representative of attorney Geoffrey Fieger threatened to make the
affair public.
"I will not let some bully stop me from doing my job," Cox said
Wednesday.
"A number of years ago, I was unfaithful to my wife," the Republican
Attorney General said with his wife Laura beside him. Both had tears in
their eyes. "We worked on our marriage day by day, week by week," he
said.
Cox said he told his wife of the affair on March 22, 2003.
The Attorney General then went on to describe communications between
himself and a man named Lee O'Brien whom he identified as an
associate of attorney Geoffrey Fieger.
Fieger, a Democrat, ran for governor in 1998 and is well known for
having defended Dr. Jack Kevorkian. He is a potential challenger to Cox
in the 2006 race for Michigan Attorney General.
Cox explained that the Attorney General's office was investigating
Mr. Fieger at the request of the Michigan Secretary of State. The
investigation focused on $450,000 that was given to a political action
committee trying to defeat a candidate for state Supreme Court.
According to Cox, Fieger's associate said the well known attorney
would expose the Attorney General's affair unless Cox looked the
other way on the PAC investigation.
"They thought I would cower," Cox said Wednesday.
Attorney General Cox cited multiple meetings or conversations between
himself and the Fieger associate. "One meeting included Fieger
himself," Cox said.
