Japan's emperor yesterday urged the country's people to accurately
understand their history in an apparent show of concern over Japan's
rapidly deteriorating relations with China and South Korea.
In remarks made on Thursday and released yesterday to mark his 72nd
birthday, Emperor Akihito, who is banned by the constitution from
commenting on political affairs, said that in their dealings with the
rest of the world the Japanese must remember that "there were rarely
peaceful times for Japan" between 1927 and 1945. During that period
Japan continued its colonisation of the Korean peninsula and invaded
parts of China, expansionist moves that culminated in its defeat in the
second world war.
