Just to keep things in perspective, we had 16 million

Yet, we've spent more time trying to put down an insurgency
in a third rate nation like Iraq than we did in destroying
the WWII Axis Powers.
Doesn't say very much about the quality of our civilian
leadership, does it? They refused to listen to their
generals when they received advice from them that they
didn't want to hear. Do you really blame the media and
the Congress for criticizing that leadership?

There is a very distinct difference between removing
an occupying power, and trying to be the occupier yourself.
Calling the Colonizing attempt on Iraq by the so-called
Coalition-Forces, "Subduing" or "Putting down an Insurgency"
is like giving thanks to England on the 4th of July for liberating
the *American-settlers* from those horrible "Injuns".
A people with a desire to be free, _WILL_ eventually find
a means to liberate themselves. (By any means necessary!).
NOTE: Those "Injun Savages" are now called;
Illegal "Latino-Aliens" :-D

I'm not disagreeing with your conclusions, but at the begining of WW2 the
Axis powers were Germany/Austria and Italy.
Japan, like America, only came into the war half way through.
Does that 16 million in uniform include *all* the Allies, the UK forces, the
Commonwealth forces, the Free French army, the millions of Russian troops
and the Polish airmen who flew with the RAF?
I'm sure there are others I've forgotten from that list.
