Review of Faith and Reason - Philosophy of Religion |
Faith and Reason - Philosophy of Religion
Modern Scholar Series - recorded books - 7 CD's
Lecturer: Professor Peter Kreeft
A highly recommend series for anyone interested in the subject of
religion and spiritual studies. The professor is a long time resident
of Boston college. I was afraid he would give a biased view of religion
due to his association with a Jesuit school. But I found this course to
be very fair minded. I could not tell and preference for any side of
the subject and he argued for all sides with the same zeal. The bulk of
the course discussed the monotheist and atheist views while the
remainder dealt with comparative religion studies of Buddhism,
Hinduism, Confucius, and Taoism.
Course Syllabus
Lecture 1 What Is Religion? Why Is It Worth Thinking About?
Lecture 2 Atheism
Lecture 3 The Problem of Evil
Lecture 4 Arguments for God's Existence from Nature (Cosmological
Arguments)
Lecture 5 Arguments for God's Existence from Human Experience
(Psychological Arguments)
Lecture 6 Religion and Science
Lecture 7 The Case Against Life After Death
Lecture 8 The Case for Life After Death: Twelve Arguments
Lecture 9 Different Concepts of Heaven
Lecture 10 Hell
Lecture 11 Testing the Different Truth-Claims of Different Religions
Lecture 12 Comparative Religions
Lecture 13 What Would Socrates Think?
Lecture 14 Religious Experience

I noticed the list of lectures and that none put a case forward against
faith in any god. He left that gap in his "fairness." Also, did he
ever broach the subject of how or why we have always had religions and
the reason for it? Did he explain why religions appear and then later
on die out as many have already done in History? It is a good subject=
"why are religions expendable?" Did he deal with the evolution of
religion?
Also, I note that he missed the religion of China. You list "Taoism
and Buddhism" but failed to list the REAL religion of ancient China,
their ancestor-worship faith. Did he recognize Marism as a religion?
Even social scientists refer to it as a "secular" religion.
I would be curious to know what he says about Hinduism because if you
ask ten Hinduis what their religion teaches, you end up with ten
answers that are totally unrecogniable to each other.

Hi chas and thanks for your comments. He discussed 20 reasons for
atheism as well as other skeptic related material.
He left that gap in his "fairness." Also, did he
ever broach the subject of how or why we have always had religions and
the reason for it?
Somewhat, but not from the beginning of man.
His fairness being I could not tell what religion he was if any from
the CD's
Did he explain why religions appear and then later
on die out as many have already done in History?
No, just stuck with major ones.
It is a good subject=
"why are religions expendable?" Did he deal with the evolution of
religion?
yes within the religions discussed
Also, I note that he missed the religion of China. You list "Taoism
and Buddhism" but failed to list the REAL religion of ancient China,
their ancestor-worship faith. Did he recognize Marism as a religion?
Even social scientists refer to it as a "secular" religion.
No, just confuc and tao. this set is only 7 cd.s so limited on scope.
I would be curious to know what he says about Hinduism because if you
ask ten Hinduis what their religion teaches, you end up with ten
answers that are totally unrecogniable to each other.
Just listen to it. very interesting regarding Hindus, although am not
into it much and you may be bored. It should be free from interlibrary
loan, so costs you zero.

Yes, I do have a story about this.
The first time I saw this movie was circa 1981 or so at an off-campus
Baptist student union in deepest, darkest East Texas. This Baptist student
union had obtained a VCR and had started a "movie night" once a week. I
heard about it and decided to attend. This was the movie they had chosen
that particular evening.
Up to this point they hadn't been vetting the movies before showing them.
There had been a few points during the film when there were some
expressions of shock, but when that final punchline was delivered, I saw at
least one girl bury her face in her hands and there were a lot of other
stunned faces. Me, I was almost rolling on the floor laughing.
So that particular quote has always seemed _particularly_ funny to me.
(Of course, the following week they announced a new policy of previewing
the films before showing them, to verify that they were "appropriate." I
never went back.)

"It's just a horror film! You know, like the ones from the 30s!"
Ah, if only...
Except I think that one would have had then rolling on the floor and
gouging their own eyes out. Not that that would have been a _bad_ thing,
mind you, but not quite so funny as the embarrassment and shock when they
got the final YF joke.
