PHOENIX (AP) - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross,
a psychiatrist who revolutionized the way
the world looks at terminally ill patients
with her book "On Death and Dying" and
later as a pioneer for hospice care, died
Tuesday. She was 78.

================================

There was only one thing Elisabeth Kubler-Ross hated
in life -- to have her name misspelled as EliZabeth.
I know becauseI 'm humbled to say I knew her personally
and we became dear friends. I'll cherish her memory,
long with her expertise, her wit, her charm, her courage
and her unbinding love for her fellow man.

Excerpt from 'On Death and Dying'
By Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Chapter 1

On the Fear of Death

<
< Let me not pray to be sheltered from
< dangers but to be fearless in facing them.
<
< Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain
< but for the heart to conquer it.
<
< Let me not look for allies in life's battlefield
< but to my own strength.

< Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved
< but hope for the patience to win my freedom.

< Grant me that I may not be a coward,
< feeling your mercy in my success alone; but let me find
< the grasp of your hand in my failure.

She can't be dead!
I ought to beat you senseless for saying such a thing!
I'd do anything for it not to be true!
The world will never be the same again.
Her legacy will be remembered.

Nice one, Gregory.
I don't agree with her stance on the afterlife, of course, and I am
more than a little skeptical of her stages of dying theory; however, I
do think that she helped to make the process of dying easier for a
great many people. As such, I would consider her a humanitarian and
worthwhile person.
I hope that her own death wasn't a difficult one.

I have never heard or read anything about her beliefs in an afterlife, but I do know that
she had no "stages of dying theory." Rather, she had defined five stages of mouring, be it
for a broken relationship, the death of a loved one or our own impending demise. Like any
psychological model, it has its flaws and many situations where it does not fit. But it was
revolutionary: no one before her had ever scientifically studied the process of mourning.
Her work gave us a way to help cope with grief, our own or someone elses. That in turn
helped spawn the hospice movement, which helps terminally ill people mourn the impending
end of their own lives with dignity and understanding. And all this without the need for
something beyond; we can come to acceptance without supernatural entities or judgement
everlasting.
