FITZROY
The Remarkable Story of Darwin's Captain and the Invention of the
Weather Forecast
By John and Mary Gribbin
Yale Univ. 336 pp. $35
Capt. Robert FitzRoy was an aristocratic, rising star in the British
Navy when he decided he needed someone to keep him company -- and keep
him sane -- on his second surveying cruise to South America. The ship's
previous captain had committed suicide near storm-blasted Tierra del
Fuego in the depths of winter, and FitzRoy was painfully conscious of
both his family history of suicide and his own tendency to violent mood
swings and depression. And so, when he set sail from Plymouth with a
miserably hung-over crew on Dec. 27, 1831, FitzRoy carried with him a
22-year-old Cambridge graduate with a budding interest in natural
history and a vague desire to see more of the world -- which is how
Charles Darwin happened to find himself on board the Beagle.

All is vanity. The weather, nor its forecast, can save your soul. Darwin,
with his monkeys and theories, cannot save your soul.
This can save your soul:
Prayers For The Faithful Departed:
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy
souls in Purgatory and for sinners everywhere -- for sinners in the Universal
Church, for those in my own home and within my own family. Amen.
Eternal Father, I offer You the Holy Wounds of Your Son, and His Precious
Blood, for the conversion of sinners and for the relief of the souls in
Purgatory.
----------
Pray, hope, and don't worry.
Worry is useless.
God is merciful and will hear your prayer.
-- Padre Pio, Pietrelcina.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-
