Minister sentenced for sexual assault

The Roselle minister who was arrested for sexually assaulting two
12-year-old boys in 2002 was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday.
John Schulte, 29, was sentenced to spend 10 years in prison, at least
five of which will be served at the state's sex offender
rehabilitation facility in Avenel, according to a clerk in Superior
Court Judge John Triarsi's chambers. He must serve at least 85 percent
of his sentence before being considered for parole.
Schulte admitted earlier this year that he fondled a boy and forced
him to perform oral sex in 1996 and then repeated his actions with two
boys in 2002. This occurred while he was a youth minister at St.
Joseph the Carpenter Church on East 3rd Avenue. He was a mentor to the
boys.
When the Archdiocese of Newark learned of the allegations, it
responded quickly and aided in the investigation, according to
archdiocese spokesman Jim Goodness.
Now the members of the archdiocese are praying for everyone involved
in the case.
"This was a tragic situation. Our prayers are with those families
right now," Goodness said of the victims' families. "At the same time,
our prayers are with John Schulte. He has a lot he'll be going
through."
The sexual assaults the boys reported occurred inside Schulte's
apartment, at St. Joseph's and inside his car, according to statements
read during the sentencing.
Schulte never got into legal trouble over the 1996 incident, but the
14-year-old victim came forward after hearing about the the pair of
boys Schulte molested in 2002.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office, which handled the case, could
not be reached for comment Tuesday.
