MORE than 1000 No War protesters will converge on
the city today to voice disapproval at the visit of U.S.
Defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Protesters will
gather on the steps of Parliament House following the
overturning of a ban by parliament Speaker Bob Such.
No War spokesman Mike Khizam said yesterday the
group was pleased the protest ban had been overturned.
"We are going full steam ahead," he said. "At this stage
we are only talking about Parliament House. It is a victory
for commonsense and has reduced the likelihood of
confrontation."
Senior police said they would "manage and facilitate"
any peaceful protest in the city.
"What we would not tolerate are any protests which were
violent, unduly disrupted pedestrian or vehicle traffic or
damaged property," Commissioner Gary Burns said.
"We do expect significent numbers . . . it does offer a
good opportunity," Mr Burns said. "The majority will be
peaceful, but we are concerned about the small number
of protesters who may infiltrate and use the opportunity
to damage property or create injuries".
Mr Rumsfeld was due to arrive in Adelaide at 8.20am today amid tight security.
A SAPOL operation involving more than 500 officers will ensure his protection during
the two-day visit for the annual AUSMIN conference.
Large sections of North Tce were blocked off from last night with further
restrictions around the Town Hall to come into force from tonight.
Mr Rumsfeld's movements have been kept under tight security. It is known he is
attending a lunch at Magill Estate. He was scheduled to have a 15minute meeting with
Premier Mike Rann tomorrow morning.
Australia will be represented at AUSMIN by Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer,
Defence Minister Robert Hill and Australian Defence Force head Air Chief Marshal
Angus Houston. In a joint statement, Mr Downer and Senator Hill said AUSMIN, hosted
alternately by Australia and the U.S., was the key forum under the ANZUS alliance for
bilateral consultation on regional and global security matters.
This is the 20th anniversary of the first AUSMIN talks held in Canberra in 1985 under
the auspices of then-Labor defence minister Kim Beazley.
"AUSMIN 2005 will be a high-level opportunity for Australia to continue close
coordination with the U.S. in the war against terrorism, including our shared
commitment to Afghanistan," they said.
The father of Australian Guantanamo Bay inmate David Hicks said yesterday he wanted
to discuss his son's case with Mr Rumsfeld, but he realised this was unlikely.
"I would like to meet him, but it would be like trying to meet the Australian
parliamentarians," Mr Hicks said.
