Object: Saint or celebrity? Cult of Mother Teresa faces tough questions
From the article:
-------------------------------------------
Two cities, both former imperial capitals, will today usher the late
Mother Teresa along a step on the path to sainthood. One, the
headquarters of the Roman Catholic church, will do so with unabashed
enthusiasm. The other, her home for 68 years - and the chief
beneficiary of her charitable work - will be strangely patchy in its
applause.
The beatification of the Albanian nun is the fastest in the Vatican's
history. The convents of Rome are packed with pilgrims eager to
witness the great event, none of whom doubt the "miracle" that
triggered the process.
But Calcutta - or Kolkata, as India's great eastern city is officially
known - is different. Questions have arisen about the miracle and
there is a certain ambivalence towards the woman known only as Mother.
In this poverty-hardened society - inured in the fatalism of Hinduism
- she was not seen as especially saintly.

I am reminded of Father Guido Sarducci when he was talking about Ann Seton's
qualifications for sainthood--"She got in with 3 lousy miracles--and I
understand two of them were card tricks."

Let's see if you win your bet, Mark. I went to google and typed in:
Truth about Mother Teresa and got 97,400 results. Not having that many
years left in my life to read all of them I read only a couple of the
articles which are not M.T.-friendly. One of the sites mentioned M.T.'s

anti-Catholic bias.

Re: Saint or celebrity? Cult of Mother

The beatification of the Albanian nun is
the fastest in the Vatican's history.

More like the beat-off-ication, given how much enjoyment she got out
of
people's misery and suffering.

Well, she had a huge bank account I'm
betting I know where it went to after she
kicked off...

The Angel of the poor died a year ago. Donations still flow in to her
Missionaries of Charity like to no other cause. But the winner of the
Nobel Peace Prize vowed to live in poverty. What then, happened to so
much money?

The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice
by Christopher Hitchens
What's next--The Girl Scouts: The Untold Story? How could anybody
write a
debunking book about Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity
order?
Well, in this little cruise missile of a book, Hitchens quickly
establishes that the
idea is not without point. After all, what is Mother Teresa doing
hanging out
with a dictator's wife in Haiti and accepting over a million dollars
from Charles
Keating? The most riveting material in the book is contained in two
letters: one
from Mother Teresa to Judge Lance Ito--then weighing what sentence to
dole
out to the convicted Keating--which cited all the work Keating has
done "to
help the poor," and another from a Los Angeles deputy D.A., Paul
Turley, back
to Mother Teresa that eloquently stated that rather than working to
reduce
Keating's sentence, she should return the money he gave her to its
rightful
owners, the defrauded bond-holders. (Significantly, Mother Teresa
never
replied.)
Another book of note is Aroup Chatterjee's "Mother Theresa: The Final
Verdict".
There was a short interview on the BBC this morning (short because
they *cut*
*him* *off* while he was speaking) with Chatterjee who refused in the
face of
the pro-Theresa interviewer (who was of Indian descent) to acceded to
her
"saintliness"; at his use of the word "cult", she interrupted him.
From <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Theresa>. This item is even
handed
and makes for a fascinating read.
Secret baptisms
Susan Shields has also stated that the organization frequently engages
in
baptisms of the people it helps. In Hitchens' book she is quoted as
follows:
In the homes for the dying, Mother taught the sisters how to
secretly
baptize those who were dying. Sisters were to ask each person in
danger of death if he wanted a 'ticket to heaven'. A affirmative
reply
was to mean consent to baptism. The sister was then to pretend
that
she was just cooling the person's forehead with a wet cloth,
while
she was in fact baptising him, saying quietly the necessary
words.
Secrecy was important so that it would not come to be known that
Mother Teresa's order was secretly baptising Hindus and Moslems.
I couldn't find any more off hand, but this alone makes for
interesting reading.
