SAMUEL ALITO PRO-RELIGION IN MARKETPLACE
By J. Grant Swank, Jr.

US President George W. Bush has presented the name of Samuel Alito, Jr., as
nominee for a seat on the US Supreme Court. Alito is pro-religious
expression in the marketplace, according to Religion News Service?s Robert
Schwanegerg.
"A review of Alito's rulings as a federal appeals judge shows he is a
vigorous defender of the right to practice one's religion."
Americans United for Separation of Church and State don?t like Alito. They
contend that he will join forces with forces such as Justice Antonio Scalia
and Justice Clarence Thomas in supporting free religious expression outside
the sanctuary.
People for the American Way likewise don?t like Alito. Elliot Mincburg
informed media that if Alito got on the bench, it would make a "?huge
difference.?" That is a difference that Mincburg does not endorse.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty spokesman Kevin Hasson is in favor of
Alito. "?Judge Alito is very respectful of religious liberty.?"

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,
