SAN DIEGO -- A priest who has been linked to a child-porn probe at a
local Catholic parish has taken a leave of absence, according to NBC
7/39.
The Rev. Gary Holtey has agreed to go on administrative leave as a
precaution, according to church officials. Holtey has served at Our Lady
of Sacred Heart, Blessed Sacrament, as a hospital chaplain at Alvarado,
Grossmont and Kaiser hospitals, and at Santa Sophia Church before
becoming the pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Church.
On Wednesday, agents with a multiagency task force about Internet crimes
against children seized computers from a San Diego parish, authorities
said.
City police and agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Department served a search warrant on May 6 at St. Charles Borromeo
Academy on Cadiz Street in the Loma Portal neighborhood, according to
San Diego police Sgt. David Jones.
According to NBC 7/39, church officials said Holtey was the subject of
the search, though they don't know exactly what he may have done.
"The enforcement officers ... insisted the warrant was under seal and
they could not give us other information, and they were there to take
what they considered evidence," said a church official, who said
investigators seized "computer equipment, some materials and documents
related to credit-card expenses."
Mark Brooks went to the same seminary as Holtey. Though they attended at
different times, Brooks said their paths did cross. Brooks said Holtey's
reputation was an issue in 1993.
"His reputation was one of being militant about his sexual-preference
activities, his lifestyle," said Brooks. "He didn't care who knew."
Holtey has been a priest in San Diego County since his ordination in
1984.
Officials with the local Catholic diocese, who have insisted that there
is no indication that any of the students at the local Catholic school
were involved, have scheduled a meeting on Thursday night with parents.
