satan? |
Hello there,
I was thinking the other day about religiouns and there fears and came to
the idea that vikings may have been the fear of jewish people in the past
i.e. the devil/satan.
Ofcourse i do not know that much about history as most people here so i was
wondering where there vikings around (may it be just in skandinavia) at the
time these strong religiouns came to be in the middle east?
Ive illustrated a image here so you can see what crossed my mind.

If someone here has any more info on the idea by all means please respond in
the news group.

Strange one,
The image of Satan that you linked to is from the Christian
period, and is a Christian imagining of Satan using various pagan
gods' parts (primarily Pan). It isn't Jewish in the slightest.

1. As far as I know, yes, Vikings may well have lived in the north in
the time the Jews copied and twisted Akhenaton's cult.
2. Vikings NEVER had horns on their helmets. Celts, sometimes yes.
Vikings, never. The horns are an infamous hollywood clichee.
3. If skin tone matters, I suggest you better draw parallels with
American Indians... but then, of course, it's not that likely that they
ever met Jews. :)
Nice picture, though!

The Vikings did not exist until long after the birth of Christ, and,
of course, their helemts did not have horns. People of an earlier
period in Scandinavia had such helmets, examples of which have been
found in their graves.

Vikings: around 1,000 AD.
Ancient Jews: around 3,500 BC.
They missed each other by about 2,500 years.

stretch.

Vangarian Guard, in Constantinople?
For sufficiently small values of "ancient", in the case of the Jews.
Varangian Guard established by Emperor Basil II in 988, with 6000
Russian Viking warriors sent by Varangian Tsar Vladimir of Russia.
Since there were apparently Jews already living in Kiev, with records
of an audience with Vladimir
(http://www.khazaria.com/khazar-diaspora.html includes a citation to
"The Russian Chronicle, describing a visit of Khazar missionaries to
Kiev in the year 986"), there seems little question that by the 10th c
CE Jews and Vikings had met. For that matter, it's *possible* --
though perhaps unlikely -- that some of the Varangian guard *were*
Jews.
