Satan and evolution |
I just read the following statistic: Only 28 percent of Americans believe in
evolution; 68 percent believe in Satan. If this is accurate, we are in real
trouble.

I like how so many in this thread have actually managed to make it sound almost
like this is anything new. :-) We've been in _real_ trouble ever since the
transformation of nuculear(sic) power into the bomb, and unless radical
fundamentalist ideology dies out before the world's first nuclear war, you might
just as well call it a match.

That's nothing, here in Poland over 90 percent of people are Roman
Catholics, our parlament decided that we'll have The Day Of Pope John
Paul II just few days ago... But uhm, almost everyone believes in
evolution. And we rather don't treat it as a belief, it's an obvious thing
and nobody doubts it... Just another fact that we learn in school, nothing

It is quite likely not accurate.
I think the real situation is a lot worse, add if by "we", you mean
the average US citizen, then yes, you *are* in trouble.
The culture of ignorance that your leaders initiated back before
McCarthy (to keep the citizens from having any real control over what
goes on in Washington), is working so well, that George Orwell would
be ashamed.
I notice that your ignorant leader has endorsed the confusion once
again, by his cretinous comments from Texas on the matter.

Nowhere in the Old or New Testaments are we called upon to "believe in
Satan." Neither is the devil mentioned in the Nicene Creed which was
adopted by the Church even before the books of the NT were officially
confirmed. Satan is a personification of evil, it's adversarial and
destructive power. Human beings find such helpful in identifying
certain realities. You really wouldn't want to do away with Santa Claus
or Uncle Sam because they are essentially representations and not
literal personages, would you?

Denny, do get real. You know full good and well that a large chunk, perhaps
even a majority of those who claim a belief in "Satan" believe in an actual
entity. It doesn't matter what you think they should or shouldn't believe, they
are Christians, and they believe in a "literal personage" named Satan.

Most Christians believed the world was flat and had four corners a few

Satan is mentioned many times in the bible. What are we supposed to do,
take its word he exists? Belief is the operative word here.
And if you think belief in Satan is as innocent as belief in Santa Claus,
think again. Fantatical Christians believe atheists are the minions of
Satan, they even go as far as to think we worship their boogeyman. Some

Sad commentary on the human condition. It seems we always require an
enemy which we find necessary to dehumanize in order to justify our
prejudice, condemnation, often a war or brutality against. Be they
Indians, blacks, gays, whatever. Unfortunately red neck types are more
susceptible to skewed notions about atheists and any others who differ
from them. Education helps, but then Nazi Germany had the best educated
populace of any country at the time. Humanity is in need of much more

Silly twaddle. In order to believe that someone is a minion of Satan, one
must believe that there is a Satan. Belief in Satan is not inherent; it
requires religious indoctrination.

Baloney. Another of your straw men. The most fanatically brutal are those
driven by ideology, very often religious ideology. One's prejudices do not
require an enemy for justification. The justifcation comes from ideology.

Which reminds me of the story about a man who was met by Satan at the
gates of hell. Satan ushered him down a seemingly endless hallway with
many different rooms on either side, each with a window in the door so
to see what was going on inside. The new inmate would have to choose
one of the rooms for himself.
They passed by the first door where he heard moans and groans from those
within. The new inmate didn't even want to look in and so passed on.
In the next room he saw everyone sweating and straining in backbreaking
toil as they shoveled coal into a red hot furnace. This was not to be
his choice either.
Then he looked into the next room and saw all inside standing on tiptoe
in a huge cesspool that reached all the way to to their lower lips. All
were urgently cautioning one another, "Don't make waves! Don't make
waves!" That room was definitely out of the question.
The next one was different. Everybody was standing around with cup and
saucer in hand, obviously enjoying their coffee. They were, however,
standing ankle deep in do-do. The new inmate thought to himself that
this was about the best he could hope for in hell. So he told the devil
he had made his choice. Almost as soon as they entered the room and he
had a couple of sips of coffee, Satan announced, "Coffee break is over!
Back on your heads!"

It is good that you realize that it is all just a story.

It's accurate, if I may be allowed to judge from my personal
experience. We've been in real trouble for quite some time now.

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet skyeyes
(skyeyes@dakotacom.net) made the light shine upon us with this:
I just read the following statistic: Only 28 percent of Americans

I saw a car today with two bumper stickers that proclaimed the owner
believes in angels. There were no baseball logos on the car either. I've
got to design one for my bike. How about "I believe in gargoyles", or "I
believe in wood trolls".
