Save John Lennon's Honor! |
Channel Four in Britain plans on showing a documentary in which Mark
David Chapman, the vicious, bloodthirsty man who assassinated John
Lennon in cold blood back in 1980, gets to get airtime. When do they
plan to air this travesty? December 8th, the twenty-fifth anniversary
of Lennon's death!
John Lennon spread peace, love, and understanding throughout the people
that he knew and those that listened to his music. When he was brutally
struck down in the prime of his life, he left behind a wife (Yoko), who
was with him when he was shot. He also left behind a five-year-old son,
Sean, and a seventeen-year-old son, Julian (from his first marriage to
Cynthia Powell Lennon).
John Lennon never got to watch his sons graduate high school or attend
college. He never got to see them grow up, get married and have their
own children. He never got to pursue whatever musical and artistic
pursuits he dreamed of achieving.
Why, then, should Mark David Chapman be given airtime to boast about
his crime?! Chapman shot Lennon to achieve fame, he has confessed. Why
give him what he desires?
If you agree that this program is outrageously inappropriate and
disgraceful to Mr. Lennon's memory, as well as to his family, friends,
and fans, please sign my petition:
http://www.petitiononline.com/karma05
There is also another petition circulating on the same matter:
http://www.petitiononline.com/number9
Please sign both. Thank you for your time!

I think it's actually a good idea to let him speak! I don't think people
should actually believe him or any justifications he makes....I think it
will most probably hoist him with his own petard! I don't see this program
as any insult or dishonouring of John Lennon! I think it will be quite
fascinating to see, especially on the anniversary of such a
historic...though thoroughly tragic...event!

I watched that turd in another interview a few years ago, I think he was up

Every third word he said was "Jesus". I think I'm going to skip this time
and play some Lennon music instead. Much more fun.

If he ever gets released (thankfully not likely, as Yoko and Sean
write impassioned pleas to the parole board when this becomes a
possibility, stating quite bluntly that they fear for their own lives
if he's paroled), his life most likely isn't worth a plugged nickel;
it's almost certain that some angry fan will exact vengeance against
him. (The irony that this would be against everything John stood for
will hopefully not be lost on Mr. Chapman at the moment, should such a
thing come to pass).
Every third word he said was "Jesus". I think I'm going to skip this time

I'll be attending the annual gathering at "Strawberry Fields", the
John Lennon Memorial in New York's Central Park (across the street
from the Dakota Building), this December 8th, along with a few
thousand close friends, many of whom will be bringing guitars. Anyone
else going?
(For those interested, we can set up a meeting place and time for a
group to attend).

That's one of the nicer aspects of favoring freedom of speech - it also means
the freedom to not have to listen to speech you don't like. In places where
you're expected to know the party line and regurgitate it on demand, you're
pretty much stuck listening to it.

Does that give him the right to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater? He has a
right to speak, but why should he have the right to be in our face on the
airwaves and then have us know that he was amplified all over Christendom?
This applies whether we tune him out or not! The petitioner makes an
excellent point. He has the right to mumble into his pillow in his prison
cell, and if the wardens put him in a protected setting where he won't get
brutalized, then he has the right to make an ***** out of himself and avoid
some of the natural consequences of that. But the right of free speech
doesn't automatically give a felon the right to become a public figure. That
is a privilege conferred upon him by sensation-seeking show producers who
should be ashamed, but who only care about notoriety and money.

John Lennon was my hero for many, many years, and I can't really say he
faded away. I still get goosebumps when I play his songs. I cried like a
baby when he died and since I was living in NY at the time, I was there, in
front of the Dakota right after he was murdered. I would have loved to get
my hands on Chapman and if I had the opportunity now, I would still show him
a good time. But I don't.
Honestly, my first reaction was to sign the petition, but upon a second
thought, I changed my mind. Shutting him up would give him the notoriety and
credit he doesn't deserve, censorship usually has the opposite effect.
Younger generations would be more tempted to hear his stupid voice if he had
a sock in his mouth. Who knows, some twisted freaks might actually make a
Guru out of him if they perceive him as a martyr.
Let him make an ***** of himself, and let the TV networks carrying his message
lose audience.
I would consider boycotting the sponsors of that program, though.

The point is, it is not his free speech that is the issue but a matter of

that he knew and those that listened to his music. When he was brutally
struck down in the prime of his life, he left behind a wife (Yoko), who
was with him when he was shot. He also left behind a five-year-old son,
Sean, and a seventeen-year-old son, Julian (from his first marriage to
Cynthia Powell Lennon).
John Lennon never got to watch his sons graduate high school

You are attempting to censor Deavid Chapman. Let his say what he has to
say, then we'll decide if we're for or against it. That's democracy, and
that's freedom of speech.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so. I mean I like some of his stuff and
respect his ideals, but there's a difference between "good" music and "popular"
music. And of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying a tune that's popular,

better musician than I am or am ever likely to be. One of his & the Beatle's
strongest talents - like most popular singers - lay in good PR. If you're good
at PR, you needn't be good at anything else to succeed. Fortunately, while not
"excellent", he & they were definitely "good", and so had both good music & good
PR to boost them over the years.

I have to disagree. Walter Everett, in his 2-volume set, "The Beatles
As Musicians", lays out a carefully presented, compelling case
(including Schenkerian analysis of every song), for the Beatles music
as not just "good" from a popular music perspective, but in many cases
"great" from an art music perspective (especially from Rubber Soul and
onward).

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so. I mean I like some of his stuff and
respect his ideals, but there's a difference between "good" music and "popular"
music.
I was mostly referring to his musicianship. He
wasn't an exceptional guitarist or vocalist, though
I'd say quite a bit better than average. His strength
was in his song writing and musical originality.
Teamed with McCartney they wrote and recorded
some truly amazing stuff. And they sang harmonies
to die for. (I always wondered why, when playing
live, one of them would suddenly step away from
his own microphone and over to the other ones mic,
and both of them sing into it. Then it dawned on
me: they didn't have stage monitors--they did it so
they could hear each other when singing harmonies!)
And of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying a tune that's popular,
but not technically "good". :-)
I thinnk their stuff started off technically good for
what it was. And over time it got extremely good,
with the help of their producer, George Martin, again,
for what it was. I have a set of Time Magazines
from 1964 to 1968. It was interesting seeing them
evolve through the eyes of Time from teeny
bopper fare to the Cover of the magazine in 3
years.
Of course suffice it to say, he was a much
better musician than I am or am ever likely to be.
Me too.
One of his & the Beatle's
strongest talents - like most popular singers - lay in good PR.
You think so? They had publicity up the wazoo, for sure
but PR? Their manager never managed a band before.
(He had a record store) He did clean up their
image--put them in suits--kind of things. But they
had a PR disaster when, in an interview, Lennon
said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. It caused
a huge uproar and backlash against the Beatles in
the US in the summer of '66. In that respect they
were pretty naive about PR
However, for the most part--and maybe this is what you'
meant--the Beatles were terrific with the press--witty
as hell. The press had never seen/experienced
anything quite like them before. Back then, the press
asked r&r types the most inane and often insulting
questions. The Beatles handled it perfectly. In
contrast, Bob Dylan didn't (see the press interview
in the movie: "Don't Look Back")
If you're good
at PR, you needn't be good at anything else to succeed. Fortunately, while not
"excellent", he & they were definitely "good", and so had both good music & good
PR to boost them over the years.
The Beatles were the right people at the right time.
I don't think there was any other 4 people who
could have pulled off what they did. And the time
was ripe for their kind of revolution. Their impact
on pop music was probably greater than even Elvis's.
They were the most inovative R&R band of their
era, that's for sure. They averaged about 50 songs,
written and recorded, a year and some of their stuff
was so good it was of the "I remember where I was
when I first heard..." category. They were workaholics
and prolific: they were even writing hits for other
groups (Peter & Gordon, Bad Finger). McCartney was,
anyway.
Cheers
