Bakersfield school district to display 'In God We Trust' motto in classes
School board makes 4-1 decision after months of debate.
The Associated Press
BAKERSFIELD A school district board has voted to display the motto "In
God We Trust" in its classrooms and offices, bucking the norm of
separation of church and state.
The board voted 4-1 on Monday to highlight the words in a poster that
also will have portions of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the
Declaration of Independence.
The board made the decision following months of contentious debate.
Opponents didn't like infusing schools with religious doctrine, while
supporters believe government and God should be intertwined.
"We're not going to accept the agenda of some radical leftists who want
to expunge God from public dialogue," said Chad Vegas, an evangelical
pastor who sits on the board of the Kern High School District. "Instead,
we're teaching our citizens including our children that the very
foundation of government is that God gave them unalienable rights that
cannot be usurped by the will of the majority or anyone else."
Vegas persuaded the board last year to change the official names of
winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter recesses.
School district board President Bob Hampton cast the sole dissenting
vote, arguing "the spiritual side of a student belongs in the home and
in the church not in the school."
"They're calling everyone who doesn't support it (the measure)
unpatriotic," he said.
The montage of documents on the poster will frame the motto in terms of
a civic lesson, said school board member Brian Batey.
Decisions by several courts have upheld the constitutionality of "In God
We Trust" on U.S. currency, with judges ruling that the words do not
force religion on anyone.

As long as it's the national motto, it's hard to argue that it
shouldn't be in classrooms.
The mistake was making it the national motto in the
first place. I say that partially because I'm an atheist,
but mostly because the old motto, "E Pluribus Unum"
was much cooler and much more appropriate to
our country.
"In God We Trust" would be better suited to a place
like Iran.

I agree. We didn't choose the "god" motto until 1954 at the height of
the McCarthy investigations.

Yes, and I'm sure that the Taliban would approve too.

As long as kooks like Vegas have to have a god crutch, god will always
be in the public dialogue somewhere. What I want to know is where was
this god person during the Revolutionary War? Waht the hell did he
do while our troops were freezing at Valley Forge?

The usual - nothing. It's hard to take care of things when you don't
exist.
