Yo,
I read this book back in the mid-80's, so I'd put the range from maybe the
'70s to early '80s. I don't remember the title, and for several years I've
been trying to figure out how to find the thing again. I have only a
sketchy memory of the overall story:
Male main character; can't remember POV. One of the techno aspects of it is
that an entire brain and spinal chord can be transplanted into another
body, so you retain your consciousness and memories even though your body
is different. Apparently this is all facilitated by some device at the base
of the spine, only his has some sort of mind-control stuff programmed into
it, as required by his mother (I think) for some reason. His body has an
irritating tendency to do things on its own (like killing people?)
As I remember, near the end of the book, the main character is approached
by a very angry woman who wants her body back--turns out that this "woman"
is actually the man who owned the body our main guy is wearing, and he's a
professional assassin of some sort. This body is referred to as a McGuffin
(or MacGuffin? *shrug*).
Does any of this ring a bell?
